Super quiet place. We were so enchanted that we visited the Museum of Tomorrow and after the visit we spent a long time enjoying the sunset. The place also has a very interesting crafts fair and some restaurant options nearby. I highly recommend

Rio de Janeiro is a dream city. The location is unique. Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer are a must. Buy tickets in advance though. Pensioners over 65 pay less.
We had a great guide in the form of tour guide Frank Hoppe, who spoke German and was humorous. Jalbier was great. We were shown a lot for 2 days of 5 hours each in a comfortable car.

We left Copacabana by metro early in the morning and got off in Carioca, we visited several places that day, and our final stop was at the Museo de Amanhã and Pier Mauá. The Museum of Tomorrow was really busy, so we decided not to go inside, but it was duing the Easter period we were there. The building from the outside is architecturally stunning, an even better view when sailing out of Rio on our cruise ship a few days later. After walking around the outside of the building we went to Praça Mauá where we saw the beautiful artwork done by Brazilian artists depicting the five continents at the time of the Rio Olympics.

This square used to be “must avoid” kind of place, which - many years ago - foreigners had to visit if they had business with the Federal Police. For the Olympic Games the place has completely been cleaned and modernised, and it is now a tourist attraction in its own right. The Museum of Tomorrow is not a must, but if you have enough time in Rio (having already seen all the more important sites and sights) this is an option. You can make a day of it in the Centro, there is a lot to see, including the São Antônio church, the São Bento monastery (don’t miss!!!) and then in Praça Mauá the Museum of Tomorrow with its futuristic building, the Museum of Art of Rio de Janeiro and the aquarium. You may get here with the new VLT tramway, which has connection to the metro.

Maua Square is the one of the most beuatiful and walkable public spaces in Rio de Janeiro. Is a perfect place to take photos at the sunset, sit on the grass, or simply admire the landscape. Here you also can visit great museums like Museu do Amanhã and Museu de Arte do Rio.
The square is part of the Porto Maravilha, a project who revitalized Rio's downtown.

Hard not to visit this Square if you are visiting the Museu do Amanha. Great views over the harbour.

The very large Maua Square marks the beginning of the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro. From 1910 onwards this became an important place of entry for goods and people into Rio but unfortunately fell into disrepair and, we understand, became a dangerous place to visit.
The square received an enormous makeover in the lead up to the 2016 Olympic Games with the demolition of the Perimeter High road and the building of the Rio Art Museum and the Museu do Amanha (Museum of Tomorrow) together with general landscape improvements. In the middle of the square is a statue of Irineu Evangelista de Souza, said to have been Brazil's industrial pioneer, that was erected in 1910.
There are great views of the harbor to be had from this square though I would not visit unless going to one of the museums..

The sign is a highlight here...its a must shot in your Rio trip photos.
On weekends there are more tourist, so it might be a bit more difficult. but there are also food trucks and small handcraft market, so it is more fun.
From here you can take good pic of the sign with museum at the back

I didn't visit Mauá Square before the revitalization, but I heard that it's very diferent than before. My experience was nice, it's a beautiful place and the Museeum of Tomorow is an interesting tour. But I was with my small child, and it becomes a little complicated. It is a better program for older children. My baby is 2 years old.

"Praça Mauá" has always been there, sided by the port of Rio de Janeiro and hidden by an awful express way (the so called Avenida Perimetral)! Recently, this express way was demolished and "Praça Mauá" (a beautiful square) came back to life! At the center of an important revitalization process of the square and of the adjoining area, two new museums were built: "Museu de Arte do Rio de Janeiro" (MAR) and "Museu do Amanhã"! Both are smashing successes, attracting thousands of visitors each month. The new tramway (VLT) connects the square to downtown and to two subway stations ("Carioca" and "Cinelândia"), as well as to Rio's Bus Station ("Rodoviária Novo Rio") and to its domestic airport ("Aeroporto Santos Dumont" - SDU)! If eating is at your plans, try "Mauá" (at the MAR Museum Roof Top) or "Mosteiro" (near the famous "Mosteiro de São Bento" church) Nevertheless, be aware of your belongings and visits after dark are at your own risk! Enjoy!

A Praça é aberta, não paga pra entrar. Para os museus cada um tem um valor e varia, tem que entrar no site pra saber. Mas tem uma promoção na terça-feira, que a entrada é grátis.

If you do not want to be cheated, this is so easy,
do not buy souvenires at touristic points such as Pão de Açúcar, Cristo do Corcovado or other visiting points of your interest. Go and shop at the same stores where those street sellers use to do their shoppings. Why pay 10, 15 or even 20 times more for a Made in China and sometimes Made in Brazil souvenires if you can pay as cheaper as possible and at the same time, you can visite one of the most courious places while in Rio? Go Downtown to SAARA district, a bunch of eleven streets with all sort of stores selling all sort of gadgets and stuffs that tourists generally love to buy.
Arriving at SAARA is so easy if you are hosted closer to subway stations. From south zone (Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon), take the line 1 (orange) train direction to Uruguai terminal station and get off at Uruguaiana Station (look for the direction signs showing Rua da Alfândega or Rua Senhor dos Passos exit). You also can leave at Presidente Vargas station, seach for the same exit direction signs I've written before. If you are coming from north zone (Tijuca area), take the line 1 (orange) train direction to Jardim Oceânico terminal station, and get off exactly as I've explained above. If you are coming from north zone (uptown), take the line 2 (green) train direction to Botafogo terminal station and also get off exactly as I've explained above. That's it!!! all trains will put you inside SAARA, a district where we really can find everything and where natives buy cheaper than cheaper.
Help Rio de Janeiro city to keep clear of illegal street sellers, blocking streets, squares and other pubic spaces. Save your money, do not spend unecessary.
Those illegal street sellers (camelôs in brazilian portuguese) do not pay public fees, they do not have official license to use public space, some of them (a considerable number) deal with products stolen from trucks costining the life of truckers (many of them are killed during the attacks leaving widows and orphan kids), they are not able to sweep and clean up the space they use at the end of the day. Do not feed this cruel chain of crime, avoid it just buying in legalized stores, kiosks, bars and restaurants.
There are reported cases of street sellers who sell drinks and some types of food baptized with soothing or somniferous remedies in which unsuspecting people after ingesting them feel ill, faint, and are attended by those who have sold them (they remain in wait observing the fainting of the victims) and at that moment, the victim has their stolen belongings such as cell phones, cameras, money, jewelry and, most importantly, their documents (IDs and passport). Be careful not to eat anything on the street if you are suspicious of the hygiene or the intentions of the vendors.
I am native!
