Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

This is another imposing building in Cinelandia. It goes so well with the Theatro Municipal. Both buildings are based on French architecture.
We learned about this building in the walking tour. It is now City Hall.

Pedro Ernesto Palace (Palácio Pedro Ernesto) is a magnificent building of neo-classical French architectural style or French Beaux-Arts architectural style, a design that was considered symbolic of Rio de Janeiro’s modernization. Its construction was started in 1919 and completed in 1923. It is also called Camara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro as well as City Hall or City Council of RDJ.
The palace is located in Cinelandia Square of Rio de Janeiro, just adjacent to Municipal Theatre and close to National Museum of Fine Arts. It now houses the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro (i.e. RDJ Municipality) which is the unicameral legislative body of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese colonists.

This is another important building facing Cinelândia. My private tour guide told me that it used to be the political and cultural centre of the whole nation of Brazil, when Rio de Janeiro was its capital. Now it serves only for the State of Rio de Janeiro.

This is a spectacular building, inside and out. We walked in not really knowing if we could get a guide, and a friendly guard led us to an office where we met Marina, a student at a Rio University studying political science and thus great interest in Rio's politics, and with great English. She gave us a tour of the chambers, meeting rooms, and discussed/interpreted many of the paintings in the building. What a gem! She is a wonderful guide with a unique perspective, and the building itself is a marvel of architecture. Highly recommend.

The Pedro Ernesto palace which was built to house the Brazilian Parliament however is now is occupied by the City Council – Cinelandia. I found it impossible to locate any information on the building itself, except it is the most photographed building in Rio de Janeiro. Taking into consideration the outside beauty of the building, I can understand this fact.

Another building composing the picture of the Historic Center of Rio de Janeiro. The whole as a whole is worth it and individually many leave to be desired, either by the infrastructure, or by the program offered to visitors. There is also a guided visit to this palace. I did not face the large number of complaints made by the visitors who made it. In any case, it is worth knowing another example of a grand architecture part of our history.

Many tourist attractions to visit but a lot of accumulated dirt.
I was in different parts of the Historic Center of RJ and the situation was the same in all of them.
