Tom offers a unique insight into the food scene here in Rio. I was concerned it would be Pastel in one place, Caipirinha in another followed by feijoada/bbq somewhere else but Tom offers so much more. His insight into the real Rio and what to eat where was amazing. The fact that he is actually a Brit who moved to Brazil a long time ago means that he can convey accurately what is actually unique and different rather than what might be different. He is eloquent and charismatic and just adds more to any excursion to a location than I can quantify easily in a short review

Wow! Thanks for this incredibly positive review Richard. I'm so happy that the Eat Rio experience resonated with you. We definitely make an effort to avoid the obvious / lackluster and instead focus on really great examples of the most delicious and unique ingredients, dishes and venues in Rio. Through the food and drinks, we hope to give our guests an understanding of what makes Rio such a special city :)

After a couple hundred reviews, I had tired of leaving TA reviews when so many have already done so and so many just link to a generic travel experience. But this tour deserves extra effort. The total antithesis to packaged tours led by joyless employees, EatRio rides on the enthusiasm of its founder and tour guide, Tom. This is his business and one that he loves and enjoys. Carefully cultivating an experience, Tom truly guides us through exotics fruits, memorable bites, a sit down meal while accented with liquors, coffees and juices. If there is a way to improve this tour, I am not sure how to do it. All in all, we spent essentially the entire day, eating, listening and learning. What an amazing way to experience Rio.

Ahhh, thank you so much! One of the things that my guides and I have in common is that we all LOVE Rio. We also love eating, drinking and showing people around this wonderful city. It's a great job, but it isn't always easy and so the passion and love for the city is a must - I'm delighted that you picked up on that because I know the tour just wouldn't work without it. We aim to give our guests a truly organic, personal experience. Every tour is different as we'll tailor things on the fly, according to our guests. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to write this amazing review. This is one for the mantelpiece! ;)

Just amazing! We couldn’t rave about Tom’s tour more and told lots of people we met whilst in Rio. We were a last minute booking however Tom fitted us into his group of 4 the next day no problem and we had a fantastic day touring the foodie sights of Rio, as well as tasting the best Caipirinhas we had all trip. Would thoroughly recommend doing this tour!

What a fantastic tour and such a fabulous way to not only gain insights into this beautiful city but also to learn about the culture of our Brazilians hosts. Eat Rio (Tom) shared with our family group of 10, some great information about the foods, their origins, and how the fruits, veg and meats are prepared. His knowledge was excellent and he made to tour suitable for all our dietary requirements, and believe me we had a number of those! We sampled various fruits in the local market, had a tasty lunch at a lovely family run restaurant, then stopped off for açai, and a few alcoholic beverages. Nothing was too much trouble for Tom, he catered for all our needs. If you enjoy eating and trying new foods, I would throughly recommend getting in touch with Eat Rio. It’ll make your trip to Rio de Janeiro all the more memorable. The only downside was that we had to cut the tour down to 4 hrs due to another appt. If I’m in Rio again I’ll definitely be booking another food tour via Tom.

Hi Shilpa! Ah, thanks so much for this lovely review. I think this was the largest private family tour I have taken in many years. It was so nice to meet you all and I was really happy that we were able to squeeze so much into the shorter tour time. Big thanks also to Priyan for helping organise and coordinate with the group so well. I hope we'll see you all back in Rio again before too long!

I've been fortunate enough to travel to many places around the world and with it do many tours (for better or worse in some cases). I'm not exaggerating when I say this tour is probably the best I've ever done. We met Tom outside the market and was instantly warm & welcoming and genuinely interested in getting to know you as a person. On warm days being an English man, I need to keep drinking water to stay hydrated. Tom noted I was about to go into a shop and buy some water and told me not to worry as all of that would be included in the tour and anything I wanted, just ask. My friend for example wanted to try fresh coconut water which Tom was more than happy to get. Starting at the markets we sampled lots of local in season fruits, tapioca pancakes and sugar cane water with lime, which surprisingly is one of the most incredible drinks I've ever had. Each food comes with explanations and stories, none of which is rehearsed and all pretty interesting. We moved onto an authentic restaurant to sample juices, beer, Cod balls and Lamb. Then onto a bar for some caprihinas and to juice shops trying all kind of different juices. We also visited two more restaurants, the first an Amazonian restaurant, including a shot of Jambu alcohol which really needs to be experienced for the mouth tingle it gives you and a Northeastern Restaurant filled with meat, cheese and cold beer. Tom was brilliant, even little things like keeping a few spare notes in his pocket for beggars turn what could be unsettling situations into positive experiences. The people, including beggars in Rio I found to be all very friendly people. Additionally, all vendors are tipped, Tom takes care of this. After the tour, Tom emails you a summary of everything you have eaten as well as recipes, restaurant and bar recommendations, things to do in Rio and recommendations for popular ongoing destinations. You won't leave this tour hungry! You may not like every food, that is not the aim, even if the only thing I didn't like was Acai, but 95% of what I tried I'd never had before and it was amazing to dive into a new culture like this. You really won't be disappointed doing this tour.

Woah! Best tour ever?! I'm flattered and quite taken aback, but also really grateful. My guides (Marcela and Gabriel) and I definitely try to take care of all the little things which could be problematic so that our guests can get on with enjoying the food, drinks, conversations and new experiences. Thanks again for booking my Eat Rio food tour! :)
