Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

It is located in Pio X Square, in the area of the historical and financial center of Rio de Janeiro. Its construction began in 1775, but it was completed almost a century later. It has a baroque and Renaissance style. It is one of the largest in the city, inside you can see numerous works of art. The façade is very beautiful and the enormous dome made of limestone brought from Lisbon stands out.

The Candelaria is in modern times mostly known for the killing of eight street children in front of the church in 1993. A stern monument in the form of an iron cross in front of the church reminds still of this. Also in front of the church is a somewhat dissonant sculpture of a partially nude lady holding a torch (see picture). I am not sure what this sculpture signifies.
The church itself is a well maintained and rich specimen of Portuguese catholic architecture ... it replaced starting 1775 a small chapel built to thank the Lord for saving the ship the Candelaria in 1607. Hence the name. In those days this was the tallest building in Rio de Janeiro, now still standing proudly at the end of the Avenida Presidente Vargas.

After having seen quite a number of "big & elaborate" cathedrals in the Spanish South America (countries such as Peru, Chile, Argentina & Uruguay) but in Brazil only those which are either big but not elaborate (such as the "main cathedrals" of Porto Alegre & Sao Paulo) or elaborate but "not so big" (not cathedrals but more like smaller churches & monasteries such as the Sao Bentos & Sao Franciscos which are of modest size but quite beautiful inside), it was kind of a "refreshing moment" I would say to be at this church with "both attributes": of a size for it to be termed "a catedral instead of an igreja"; and with elaborateness such as shrines along the length (leading to the altar), colorful art scenes above both along the ceiling & inside the dome, two raised structures like pulpits or such (one on each side of the altar) each supported from underneath by a "winged angel" & also a stairway with its one side just "fully carved" with beautiful scenes.
Coming by metro, Uruguaiana Station (both Lines 1 & 2) is where to get off from which it's just a 5-to-10-minute walk heading east to this church (with its dome clearly visible on one end of the big street right beside the station), and yes actually also should not be missed after this church, by continuing your way north (to the left after coming out from the side of the "big facade") with the way winding through the narrow streets of the old 'centro' part of the city for about 15 minutes, is Sao Bento Monastery with a gold-glittered interior which I would just describe as "quite literally so" (yes a "very worthwhile" site to visit despite its modest size).

So heavenly inside! The roof is painted beautifully, there are several statue/monuments along both sides of the church, and the main alter area is beautiful.

Could not take many pictures because a mass was in service. Very striking older architecture surrounded by newer buildings.

I have special interest for the Portuguese colonial history and, having seen Portuguese churches in Asia, Europe and South America, I think this has been one of my favourite one worldwide so far.
The facade is impressive. The works inside include paintings showing scenes of Portuguese travelers which can capture so much your attention (you have to look upwards immediately after entering the nave, there is a long row of them before you reach the trancept).
It is worth stay a long while to stare and explore. It is also very well kept.

Historical Catholic Church from 18th century with pretty interior design. Closed on the afternoon, so best time to visit would be in the morning or early noon. Worth quick stop on a tour of Centro for its mixed architecture (classic, baroque and romantic).

Everytime we receive visitors in Rio we normally take them to the Cathedral but this time we decided to also go to Candelaria, and it was totally worth it, so beautiful! The outside doesn't do justice to the inside which is wonderful and full of details.
We went on a weekend (it closes at 12), we decided to start from there and then go to CCBB, Palacio Tiradentes and walk around the area which is very nice...

we took the metro from the orange line's 1st station Gen Osario which is in copacabana and got out through the candelaria exit for a day in centro to visit all the beautiful churches... this church was right opposite the metro exit and was so lovely... great carvings, silver chandeliers, lovely stained glass ... quite worth the visit
