Neighborhood: Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

- Danielle B1 contributionGreat place to learn and to meet people!!I have had a great experience so far at Rio & Learn! In less than 3 months I have gone from speaking no Portuguese at all to having real conversations with locals. The school is also a wonderful way to meet new people. I came to Brazil alone but am never without things to do and people to spend time with thanks to Rio & Learn!Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 26, 2023
- Jack L6 contributionsFun times at Rio&LearnSigning up with this school and spending time with this community was a great way to spend a few weeks in Rio. My portuguese improved alot with Ze, Lucas, Diogo and the other teachers thanks to the fun way they taught, but more importantly for me (a solo traveler), the school makes it easy to make friends. Would highly recommend !Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 11, 2023
- Xianming H1 contributionFun programI took a 2-week course at Rio & Learn in July, 2023. I greatly benefited from this program. In the morning, we had lessons in the classroom. In the afternoon, we have various activities to get a chance to use our language skills and tour the city. It was great fun and I highly recommend it.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten November 29, 2023
- Paula Andrea O2 contributionsThe best portuguese school in RJI recently spent a month studying Portuguese in Rio&Learn, and I had an amazing experience. The classes were incredibly interactive and engaging, and the teachers were some of the best I've ever had. In addition to the classes, the school also offered a variety of activities in the afternoons, which gave me the opportunity to practice my Portuguese and interact with other students. I felt like I was truly living and learning in Brazil, and I would highly recommend this school to anyone who is interested in learning Portuguese.Dear Paula, your positive feedback truly brightens our day! We're thrilled that you cherished your time spent learning in our school. - Nicholas J1 contributionBest Learning Experience Ever!I spent two weeks taking Portuguese courses at the Rio&Learn language school located in Copacabana. Due to only having two weeks in Rio, I decided to take the Immersion classes, which meant I spent 6 hours daily 1:1 with a teacher. The "classes" are structured to help you learn Portuguese in real-world settings. Rather than sitting in a classroom, the school would plan daily activities for me to explore Rio with my teacher and design relevant lesson plans based on that day's activities. To provide a couple examples: one day we went to a street market to learn about the different fruits and vegetables, try the fruits/vegetables, and practice speaking with the vendors; another day we went to the Christ the Redeemer Statue and walked around a park, all while speaking 100% in Portuguese. My primary teacher was Paulo, but I also spent a few days with Ana Paula and Diogo. All three teachers were great, and I enjoyed having a mix of teachers because of their different styles. My time with Rio&Learn was amazing, and I couldn't recommend it enough, especially as a solo traveler. It was like having Portuguese Teachers and Tour Guides all-in-one. Not to mention, I was able to meet other students from all over the world who were also there learning Portuguese. Although I wasn't in their group classes (because I was in my 1:1 Immersion program), I usually joined the groups in the afternoon/evening for additional learning/exploring activities in the city. I consider my trip to Rio to be my favorite trip of my life, and I recommend Rio&Learn to anyone that wants to learn Portuguese!Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten January 29, 2024
- Ross G1 contributionThe school you should study at.This school is fantastic, overall I spent approximately 3 months. I started school knowing barely any Portuguese and by the time I left I felt confident with my ability. The methods chosen by the school are brilliant, including going out to practice in real life with real locals. The after school activities are also an amazing opportunity to get to know the city and also continue to practice your Portuguese. The teachers are helpful, patient and knowledgeable. I would 100% recommend this school.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 11, 2024
- Santino M1 contributionSantino's experience at Rio & LearnI enjoyed my stay here in Rio de Janeiro, especially with Rio&Learn. I've stayed at the school for three months from March till June 2024. The facilities and layout of the school is very organised and I felt the impression that the teachers enjoyed what they were doing as well. I also liked the extra curricular activities that they offered outside of class, as it helped me gain a better understanding of the language and to immerse myself within the Brazilian culture.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten June 7, 2024
- elisabetta r1 contributionBest experience! My time at Rio&Learn school was absolutely amazing! All the professors were great and the morning classes really helped me to improve my Portuguese. The afternoon activities were my favorite part. I got the chance to explore the city and make so many new friends while learning Portuguese - the perfect combination! I really recommend this school and I will definitely go back in the future!Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten June 12, 2024
- Daniel P1 contributionLively and Social School to Study Beginner's PortugueseI had a great time studying with Rio & Learn for 5 weeks. The best part about this school are by far the teachers. They have a wonderful team of friendly, funny, dedicated teachers who are a pleasure to learn with. Shout out to Amanda V who took our class for the most lessons, she is a wonderful teacher and because of this I chose to follow some extra classes after my group sessions finished. I also enjoyed my classes with Madu and Julie. This school is a great place to meet other students, there is lots of time for socialising, and of course the extracurricular activities after school during the week are a nice way to explore what Rio has to offer while practising the Portuguese you have learnt during the day. The teaching method is good for beginners who just want to navigate Brazil and be able to converse with locals. The focus is on speaking, colloquialisms, local culture and daily life. There isn't much focus on grammar or writing, and the lessons begin to repeat themselves after a while, so if you want to get to an expert level you will need to find some extra options. I'm not a big fan of their attitude on money. For example, I first purchased a full day immersion (6 hours for €170) which came with lunch. After lunch, we went to a beach kiosk, and I was told that the immersion didn't include my coconut water or the drink for the teacher, so I paid for both. Not a big deal, but it's just the vibe that it creates after spending so much money on the day already. Also, if you buy 4 weeks of classes and want (for example) another 4 weeks, they will not give you the 8-week price even though you have been at the school 8 weeks, you have to pay the 4-week price again. Lastly the weekend activities are a huge rip-off, it's either R$200 or R$250 and you can only pay in cash for some reason which is annoying. I went to a football match which cost me R$250 and included the ticket which was worth R$70, so you end up paying R$180 for one of the teachers to escort you there and watch the game with you and the other students.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten July 18, 2024

If you are interested in the group online classes with this school, proceed carefully. I recently signed up for three weeks of the online intensive course, which meets for two hours every day. I enjoyed the first two weeks of class and felt that the teachers were friendly and that the class was reasonably entertainting (although I didn't see anything particularly novel about their approach to teaching - it was mostly just explanation and practice exercises). At the end of the third week, I got placed into a different group because the other two people in my group stopped taking classes. When I looked at the material for the upcoming week, I noticed that we had gone back to the very beginning with lessons on the Portuguese alphabet, basic expressions like 'I don't understand', and greetings. Having just had 20 hours of class, this did not make sense. When I emailed the school to inquire, they did not have a satisfactory answer and simply told me that I hadn't seen the material before. While this was technically true because I had not covered the content with them, in terms of the level of content, their answer did not make any sense. The school advertises its flexible weekly groupings that supposedly allow one to advance at one's own pace, but it seems fairly obvious that this is a misrepresentation. They had one beginner's group in my chosen time slot and shoe-horned everyone in the general beginner level into it, regardless of previous knowledge. This is not a very effective way to run language classes. I asked to switch to private classes instead and to have my payment be transferred to cover them but they ignored the request and have simply kept my money although I did not attend any classes in the last week. Lastly, when I tried to join the class on the first day of the last week just to check in, the teacher for some unexplained reason did not authorize my entry into the class, despite the fact that I tried for 15 minutes and logged in multiple times. I was later told that I had to make up the class during another time slot during the same week, which wasn't particularly accommodating given that the mistake was not mine. And given the small number of students in the class, it's hard to understand why the teacher didn't allow me to enter the online class anyway.
In short, while the classes themselves were ok, the management and organization were not and I cannot recommend the school for group online classes.

I love learning with Rio and Learn. I have been studying for almost two months now and I feel so much more confident speaking in Portuguese. I have tried lots of different ways to learn and this is by far the best. I have been doing classes at home online so it has fitted in really well with my work life too. I would recommend them to anyone wanting to learn Portuguese. :)

I spent one week in class with Rio & learn and I can't recommend them highly enough. I went in knowing basically nothing and by the end of the week I felt confident moving around the city on my own. From the moment you walk in the school you're greeted in Portuguese and everyone is expected to try to converse in Portuguese, so very quickly they push you into using the language. Diogo and Samir are the best teachers, they'll have you laughing so much it doesn't feel like class.
The best part of the school for me though was the after class activities. Everyday after class there were organized activities around the city so we got to see the sights, learned to use the metro, got more confident moving around Rio - all while practicing Portuguese. Some days we would end up being "in class" for an extra 3 hours! Really they're the best, if you want to learn Portuguese or even if you're just a tourist in Rio this is the best way to learn the language and see the city/culture.
Valeu!

I really enjoyed studying Portuguese at the Rio and Learn for my 160 hours. The professors were nice, the classes benefitting for my Portuguese, I had a desire learn Portuguese after I arrived in Brazil, (I'm a person who begin Portuguese from zero knowledge). After taking the class I thought I was improve my Portuguese so much! Their educational approach guarantees that you will learn a lot of Portuguese quick also they provide a lot of opportunities to use what you learned in real-life situations from having conversation with Carioca, shopping at a market and even sitting in the Bar!!
Thank you for all support to the teachers, especially Dayane, Vinicius, and Dani!!
Staying at Dona Rosa’ family was amazing too, the family is so warm and make me felt like home. All in all I had a wonderful time there. I could easily have spend more time here!

I just returned from a 3 weeks language immersion course (8 hours monday-friday) and can attest that the scope of the program has indeed helped me progress in my Portuguese conversation skills. This is my second year attending a course at Rio&Learn and will eventually return next year.
My program was tailored based on my interest in places, situations and what conversational skills I wanted to practice since most of my Brazilian Portuguese has been online. The school put together a great schedule plus included some RioLive outings in order to interact with other students and continue practicing for extra hours during the day.
There is a lot of interaction with locals, visits to cultural/historical sites and best of all is the quality of the professors and the staff members. My main professor was Zé but I also had lessons with Ana Paula, Diogo, Lucas and Paulo. Each professor is very unique and integrated their personal touch to every class, making the learning experience more engaging and interest.
I recommend Rio&Learn to everyone who want to have a unique experience while conducting their language training in Rio and one advantage is that they do have different modes of learning such as immersion, classes online or in-person (groups or private). Thanks to Lais, Dayane, Patrick and Albert for the admin support!
Obrigada,
Natalia

This school and its teachers have made my time in Rio so memorable. I came to Brazil four weeks ago speaking NO Portuguese, and now I can hold more advanced conversations with Brazilians. The staff is incredibly friendly, willing to help you learn and acclimate to Rio, and become your friends. The classes have taught me more than I could learn in a classroom in the US, and the RioLIVE! activities are a built-in way to make sure I get out and know the city. In short, I am extremely satisfied with my time at Rio & Learn.

This is my second time to study at the school and it was as enjoyable as the first! I came back because the school offers more than just a place to learn the language in a classroom. The organized activities allow you to experience various aspects of the city, try out your Portuguese (whatever the level) and meet other like-minded people. I've formed new friendships each visit.
The language instruction is also highly recommended. There is plenty of flexibility to suit a variety of learning styles and time commitments. The instructors are all well-versed in covering material but also drawing out your interests and building conversations from there.
Will definitely enroll again when I next visit Rio.

I had 12 weeks of online Portuguese classes in group (10 hours per week) with them last year (from level 0), and right now I restarted it again because I just love the teachers there and the way they teach the language. The school focuses on oral communication and the classes are never boring. You will make rapid progress and get to know really cool people. Just after 8 weeks of study this year, I am already speaking portuguese fluently. Highly recommended!

Olá Thanos!
It depends which course you will contract. You have diferente possibilites depending which course do you choose.
If you are going to be just one week I recommend you the Rio & Immersion course. Anyway if you prefer the cheapest option you can study with Rio & Learn inGroup that are 20 hours of group classes (máximum 6 students). See more information of our courses on our courses page and see which one fits you better.
