The great thing about Botafogo beach is that it is generally less crowded than the more famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Whereas all the tourists flock to these two, the locals tend to hang out more at Botofogo. There's also a great view of Sugarloaf from here.

However, although you might have more room to pitch up your umbrella and sun loungers (which are available to rent), the water here is a bit dirtier than at the other two beaches.

We visited Praia de Botafogo, despite being warned against it by some of the locals.

When we got there, it was pretty deserted; Tourist attraction, it definitely isn't (the water is too polluted to actually go in). Which is a pity as the beach itself has beautiful views overlooking Baía da Guanabara and Pão de Açúcar. With calm waters and Cristo Redentor directly behind you, it seems like the perfect place to chill out. Which it was, until we were approached by a guy looking to either offer us drugs or mug us (we couldn't tell) so we feigned ignorance and beat a hasty retreat.

So much potential, but slightly wasted :|

We visited Botafogo Beach for the views than the beach itself.

The views of he Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer statue.

Then there were the yachts and the motorboats. It does look like a playground for the wealthy.

This beach is definitely not for swimming. Crowded with Rio elite's yachts, it is a heavily polluted beach with dead fish and vultures hovering everywhere. Pigeon droppings and other debris too. I made the mistake of walking along it barefoot, and swiftly regretted it. Never again.

The view is great. One can have some idea of how this setting was in old times. However, too many issues not to consider. Firstly, pollution, and lack of minimal cleanliness on the pavement. And, most important, insecurity. It is hard not to be worried. Too many robberies and pickpockets to be brave enough to walk by in the evening. Shame!

Lovely view of the Sugarloaf but I'm not sure if you can swim at this beach. There was no one on it and didn't look like your typical beach resort. It is quite scenic though and in a nice quiet location with bars, restaurants and a big shopping mall nearby. I stayed in El Misti Botofogo while in Rio and despite not using this beach for recreation I found the area perfect for a base in Rio. The metro gives really easy and quick access to all popular areas in Rio. I felt safe and at home here.

This beach has a fantastic view to the Sugar Loaf hill and is crossed by high-speed avenues. Close to the Gloria marine, the water is inappropriate for bathing. Between the buildings, you can see the Corcovado with Christ. There is a trail for walking, jogging and bykes. The clear sand is interesting place for exercising or play a soccer game. Because of its difficult accessibility, this beach is not very touristic. Lots of commerce nearby, close to the shopping mall Praia Botafogo, the best thing to do is watching the beautiful Guanabara Bay with lots of boats and the Sugar Loaf as the post card. Interesting beach.

It´s worth more for the views than the beach itself. Guanabara bay is poluteted and even more at this beach wich is in a cove, so don´t enter the water, but the views around and the scenary is very beautiful and plesant to walk nearby specially in the morning and sunset.

Third Best Beach in Rio after Ipanema and Copacabana. It is much more relaxed and the population there is more down to earth and casual.

Nice beach - pity it is not very clean. There are great views to Sugarloaf Mountain. Not at all as busy as Ipanema or Copacabana.
