I was convinced by a friend to hang out on this “locals” beach. One of the most beautiful beaches in Rio, which sits at the bottom of a favela. I was way out of my comfort zone for the first 30 minutes unable to relax as my iPhone was with me. After realizing the locals could care less about if I was there, and everyone had smart phones, I began to relax. We had to walk down a steep makeshift “public access” stairs to get to access the beach. People there were having so much fun and I am so happy I was able to experience this awesome beach.

This beach is a bit if a hidden gem. It is in front of favela Vidigal (on the other side of of the road called Niemeyer). You can only see it once you've walked down the long stairs to the beach itself. In the period I was there, the beach and water was clean and it felt safe. I can imagine you shouldn't be here when it's getting dark.

This is a small ,essentially private beach below the Sheraton in the Leblon area. The sand was clean and the beach was quiet and had a number of granite roicks that added atmosphere. One of the best beaches away from the tourists,

This small beach has a great scenery thanks to the huge rock in the middle of the beach and its view towards Ipanema Beach. It is located in a small bay directly below the Sheraton Hotel, but can also be accessed by a steep stairway from the road above. In July (winter in Brazil) the waves can be a little rough, and the current is strong. Be careful when you climb across the big stones to the beach, as sudden waves can hit you (looking at the pics from others, the waves seem to be a lot calmer in the high season (december/January).

Worth going to see some alternatives to Ipanema, Leblon and Copoacobana.
This beach is usually less crowded and can be reached easily from Avenida Niemayer.
Enjoy.
