Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Next to the Church is Colégio São Bento and behind the Church there is a viewpoint from where you can see the Museum of Tomorrow and a beautiful sunset. Free entry. The Monastery next door is not open to visitors and does not have a bakery as I saw in some reports. Visitation is only at the Church (which is beautiful) and the Lookout Point. Visit the website to see opening times.

I would like to thank the kind gentleman today who was manning the office box adjacent to the church for kindly ordering me a e-hailing transport back to my hotel through his app. My app was not working well and it was so frustrating. It is the Christian kindness exemplified by him that stands out to a visitor despite our language barrier, a credit to the institution he is working for. God bless you.

If you like being blown away by church interiors do no miss Sao Bento Monastery. We trekked to find the entrance drive closed. But do not be put off, turn left and walk along the side until you see the other entrance with huge open manned gates. We were beckoned in and walked up the steep driveway. The outside is nothing special, but then inside POW ! Incidentally we were staying down by Cocabanoa Beach and used the Metro to transverse the city. 6.9 Real return ticket. Put ticket in slot. Machine eats the ticket but then allows you entrance to the platforms.

Whatever your views on religion, it's impossible to defend the Sao Bento Monastery. There is nothing remotely artistically worthy of any of the objects on display here, instead all you get is a building covered in gold, in an ugly, ostentatious display that sends a terrible signal about the role of the church in Brazil.
The neighbourhood is also quite boring, with little else to see and do here, although if you walk to the left, and through a narrow arch, you do come to a school, and near there, views over the bay.
Avoid.

Beyond the geographical position and the views that can be admired from the various hills, the "wonderful city" does not have much, in my opinion, from an artistic point of view. With the Portuguese Royal Reading Cabinet, this monastery is one of the few artistic beauties to see. The monastery of San Benedetto (in Portuguese: Mosteiro de São Bento) was built at the beginning of the seventeenth century on land donated to the monks of the order of San Benedetto by the noble Manoel de Brito and his son Diogo de Brito de Lacerda. The rather simple façade has three arches at the entrance and a triangular pediment with two identical bell towers on the sides. On the contrary, the interior is a whole profusion of precious woods and gold in various styles ranging from the baroque of the end of the 17th century to the rococo of the second half of the 18th century. The various chapels are worth seeing, in particular that of the Blessed Sacrament by Inacio Ferreira Pinto, as well as the organ.

Ancient monastery, dating back to the end of 1500.
He finds himself drowned in the center of Rio de Janeiro, on a hill that in ancient times was certainly something else.
Fairly anonymous exterior.
The wealth of detail inside the church is fascinating. The 18-karat gold-plated gold engravings took decades to complete. The splendid main altar, eight side chapels are distributed along the entire nave, all finely decorated in Baroque style and rigorously covered in gold.
There is also a small terrace behind the convent overlooking the port and Calatrava's famous “Museu do Amanhã”.

When you arrive at this Monastery you are amazed at how beautiful it is. Gold-leafed walls make the environment beautiful. Many sacred images and an incredible feeling of peace. In Patio there is a store that sells Saint Benedict's medals and books written by Benedictine monks

The Monastery and the Church are two architecturally very beautiful buildings located in the centre of Rio de Janeiro. Access is easy, close to Plaza Mauá and from it (more from its parking lot) you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Bay of Guanabara, the Rio-Niterói Bridge and the Plaza and Pier Mauá. The church was restored a few years ago and is still very well preserved. The interior of the church is a beautiful example of Brazilian Baroque. On Sundays early in the morning there is Mass accompanied by Gregorian singing (as in the Monastery of St. Benedict of São Paulo). I recommend it to religious and non-religious.

Probably the best example of colonial/Baroque architecture in Rio de Janeiro, the monastery, situated on top of a hill near Praça Mauá, should not be missed. A oasis of tranquility in busy downtown Rio, the church interior is richly decorated in gold. Mass on Sunday is celebrated with Gregorian chant and organ music.
