Definitely not what they see it is. Went there on a January weekend and it was busy! You couldn’t even walk. There was a very dangerous feel to it as people were hawk eying me left and right. 3 kids tried to tackle me and steel my phone. Beach isn’t so clean. I could have went on the wrong time but I definitely would only go to copacabana beach as it is much better if you are staying in that area. LEAVE ALL BELONGINGS IN ROOM.

This is the beach to visit just before sunset if you're lucky enough to get an evening that isn't raining. we had to try on several occasions before we finally saw what all the fuss was about. And yes it's worth it.

This is the height of overpriced tourist Brazil, Of course you must go, but dont expect anything other than a tiourist overpriced experience! If you want the real Brazil spend £15 on uber and go to Barra or Recreio, see the real Brazil and get you taxi fare back on the cost of the first 4 Beers ! Also if a weekend you will see the beautiful, young people of legend, which you will not at Ipamena!

Get a caipirinha and enjoy the sunset! I also enjoyed a morning walk on the beach with less crowds. Keep close track of your surroundings. I was taking lots of photos up on the boardwalk and someone I had pegged earlier as a shady character came up close to me from behind and I think was making an attempt at my bag but I had already turned. Basically just be hyper aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. I was taking photos with a camera as a solo female so prime target. I felt very comfortable down on the beach. The views are just amazing. I preferred Ipanema to Copacabana for the views.
