Sitting on a deck chair under an umbrella with vendors walking past selling anything you want i.e. beers, it really is Rio in a nutshell. If you´re also lucky enough to have hotel service on the beach it makes it even easier and safer. It´s advisable not to take too many valuables with you and if you do not to... More

We were staying on copocabana and took a walk to Ipanema beach as we had heard so much about it. We were rather underwhelmed, The beach is smaller (less sand) than Copocabana and there wasn't any particular vibe or feel that we could detect. It was a public holiday and so busy and also reassuring to see lots of police around... pretty disappointed. I wanted to sing the song (you know which one) - so it was one of my very first stops. Well - it smelled like sewage (I understand that that is a common occurrence after rain - bring it down from the slums/favellas) and the sand was ....littered/dirty. You couldn't look a hand span without seeing a wrapper... More

Yes, Ipanema Beach is amazing and a must 'do' in Rio de Janeiro. It really is a unique experience unlike any other beach in the world. However, you also need to be aware of the dangers. I'm a very savvy traveller and I know Rio de Janeiro and Brazil very well. I have traveled here many, many times over the... More

Beautiful and sweet beach. We was there one day at Posto 9. Unfortunately there was a lot locals, almost at every table smoking marijuana! Made us feel unsafe and uncomfortable. The air was not filled with fresh smell from sea, no it was filled with marijuana smoke, almost made us puke. Some of the locals seems criminal. The baracca owner... More

I am not generally a 'beach' person but could not go to Rio without a trip to Ipanema beach. Spent a fabulous couple of hours just sitting on the beach, watching the rolling waves and enjoying the antics of the people nearby.

Rio was a great destination and a few key words comes to mind: 1.English: if you are planning a trip to RIO, don't live under any illusion that you will be understood when speaking English, as NO ONE in Rio understands ANY English. Nobody straight from the shop attendants, taxi drivers, pharmacists, tourist information attendees, waiters - no one will... More

We sat by Posto 9 after a wonderful lunch. People are packed in cheek to cheek - it is super crowded on a weekend which made it that much more fun. There are lots of beautiful people on the beach, the water is great and the views incomparable. If you like beaches, this is one to visit!

I suggest going at sunset for a beautiful view, pictures can't even do it justice. One of my favorite places to visit in the city!
