Stunning place to visit, if you know what to expect.
The tickets for foreigners cost more than for the locals, and you can only pay cash. If you are ok with that, go and enjoy this absolutely stunning park.
Make it your own journey, we walked it through without a guide or without any organised groups and we absolutely loved it.
We saw many examples of fauna and flora as well as enjoyed amazing views.
We visited the gardens just after a big rain and the air smelled wonderful.
One of the best things to do in Rio.

We just got back from our tour of the Botanical Gardens of Rio de Janiero. It was an amazing way to spend the morning. We really enjoyed how quiet and peaceful it was in the middle of this bustling city of ten million people.

I can not understand why anyone would rate this anything less than five stars. If you enjoy scenic landscapes, and like seeing interesting plants and animals, this is a can’t-miss.

Visited mid April with my partner and our 12 year old on a beautiful sunny day and spent a relaxing 2 ½ hours here exploring. Be aware that it is cash only and, at the time we visited, you also you needed to provide your Covid passes and ID at the entrance. It is rather a large expansive place and we did have to keep checking the maps to try and work out what we had and hadn’t seen and also to navigate around (you can take a little electric bus which stops at the bus stops – but was not sure if this was included or an extra fee and we were happy to just wander on our own). A couple of the exhibits were closed (eg the orchids), the rose garden was past its best and the Japanese garden was a little disappointing (especially as there was supposed to be coy carp but no fish were in the pond at all) but there was still plenty to see, plus lots of little monkeys playing in the trees. Well worth a visit if you have a few hours to spend.

Overrated park entry fee was expensive 69 rios for foreigner, park was crappy . Plants were not well kept, not well trimmed and a total waste of
20$. Also electrical vehicle ride is extra chargeable. Bougainvillea looked like crap. Looks more like a free park , the free parks back home looks better than this

I really enjoyed just walking around the gardens and taking photos. I had to sign in as a photographer to use my camera equipment but that was fine, there was no hassle and no additional charge.

The waterfall area is great for practicing long exposure shots if that's what you are into. It's also nice to just relax.

Walking down under the huge palm trees was pretty neat. It was just a quiet spot.

Like most things in Rio it wasn't anything special but it also was a good value for the admission price. It was also one of the cleanest areas in the city that I had a chance to visit and the staff speak English which to me is showing they want to encourage tourism.

I recommend the Botanical Garden for families with small kids as it is stroller accessible. It is also a good spot for the older crowds (55+) who are looking for some peace and quiet.

Be aware! Cash only! we got really stuck by the entrance for an hour. There is a QR code by the ticket booth for buying tickets online. After creating account, verifying email and putting credit card info we fond out that only Brazilian citizens can purchase tickets online. No ATM around either. So make sure you have cash 65 Reals per person ($13). Well park itself is very nice, big, with ponds, hills and streams. We saw monkeys!!
I would recommend it to everyone. Just bring Reals with you.

We spent 3 hours in the lovely garden today, a haven of tranquility in the bustle of the city and the maintenance is meticulous a real credit to the team.

The glass house collections are restricted access and cost an additional £5 per person which, given the limited access and cordoned off areas, seems excessive when the garden as a whole is free to access.

Clearly I’m not alone in that view given we saw an individual who had previously turned away sneak in via the unmanned exit door.

Glass house aside the gardens are well worth a visit and I appreciate that the society is trying out ways of providing a safe experience - they deserve all our support, very much recommended.

We went on Sunday morning March 8 2020. Two days ago it was raining all day and night and the park workers were busy at work raking up and picking up the leaves/debris. So, the appearance of the park still looks decent to me.

I did see mosquito swarm in the Sensorial garden where are herb planted. Lucky that I read past postings warning me to apply insect repellent.

Park ranger will blow the whistle real loud to alert you not to step over the designated walkway onto the grassy area.

Other than the main entrance (Portao 1008) with the big tall sign, there is the second alternate entrance (Portao 920) further down which also has a ticket booth.
There were intricate antique water fountains in at least 2 area of the park (that I come across) which looked like drinking fountain by todays design.

The old brochure map did not update one of the restaurant location that had demolished. It was at the “Gunpowder factory ruins” next to the children play area. By the time we walked there following the map and hope to have refreshment and rest, there was no sign of restaurant existence.

Overall, the park is spacious and offered a nice strolling. It is not on a time constraint tourist schedule. You need to schedule your time and relax in this park.
We followed the suggested trail marked by the green line on the brochure map and was satisfied that we have seen and transverse majority of the attractions/vista in the park.

All the trails had very well marked sign showing the path name so you will cross reference to your brochure map to check which turns to go.

I would advise you not to come after a heavy downpour the day before as the park is crisscrossed by many drains and waterway fed by the tall mountains and the Atlantic Forest.

It is a little disappointed at the Japanese Garden near the Portao 920 entrance. The theme is only a slight touch on Japanese garden features giving you a little flavor. So dial down your expectation and not to compare what you have seen in other Japanese Garden elsewhere.

There was an entrance fee, so we didn’t end up going in but only took pictures near the gate. There Were huge huge Palm trees lined up. Ended up waking to Parque Lage instead which was about a mile away.

If you are a tourist, don't go because they will charge a ridiculous amount for the entrance. They have a special price (15 reais) if you show any document that proves that you live in Rio de Janeiro. I'm brazilian, but I'm currently living in Denmark. Since I'm honest, I told that right now I was living abroad and didn't have such a document to show. Because I said that, they labeled me as a "foreigner" and they charged me 60 reais! I hope that the whole place is set on fire by a lightning bolt or something.
The place has some interesting plants if you are into nature and stuff.
