The area

Address
Neighborhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

We were lucky that we didn't who up at the earlier time listed on their website, as the tour time was different. We thought the cafe part of the building was quite interesting and unique, while we felt the actual performance hall was not as outstanding as other theatres we've seen elsewhere. It was "ok," just not fabulous. We knowingly took the tour that was in Portuguese in order to see the various rooms.

I didn’t go in the theater, but the pictures I took will remain in my memory for a long time. The architecture is amazing, and the location is central to most everything else in downtown Rio. While tourists may tend to miss it unless in the area to see Lapa, I recommend that everyone take a bit of time to appreciate its design and steeped cultural history for the Rio community.

Ranks with the great theaters of the world, like Paris and Buenos Aires. But just try and get a tour reservation! There's a method to reserving, but there's a madness to the method.

There are no online reservations, and no one seems to know how it's done. My favela guide finally said you have to go in the morning in person. I did that, and it was closed. Apparently the magic hour is 10:00, preferably on a day they have tours. Not 9:00. They will be closed and the gates will be locked. Not anytime after 10:00; they will sell out very quickly.

So at 9:50, I got there and joined the queue forming in front of the locked gates, my only hint that I came at the right time. As we waited, we were at least treated to some sidewalk entertainment of a local getting into a fistfight with one of the local homeless guys, with a policeman working to diffuse the situation.

Oh and btw, some days they have tours once a day, and some days thrice. Thursday worked the best when I was there, but that could change on a dime. But whenever you go, know your Portuguese, because there is no English tour. ...except once on Saturday.

The Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important Brazilian theatres. It is a beautiful building with its facade inspired by the Paris Opera. Its construction began in 1905 and was completed in 1909. The theatre has fixed artistic bodies, such as the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro, the Theatre Choir and the Theatre Ballet. Joined to the Theatre there is also the Maria Olenewa State School of Dance. Despite its name the Theatro belongs to the State of Rio de Janeiro. For this reason, it is the theater that houses the great performances of music, ballet and opera that take place in Rio de Janeiro. If possible, make a guided tour of the interior of the theater, with its wonderful stage, gorgeous curtains, armchairs and cabins. The history of the theater is very rich and worth knowing; as its activities are planned well in advance, you may not be able to attend a show due to lack of admission, but it does not cost to try. The experience is rewarding.

We came on 2 July, theater closed and guided visits only from 14 July.

Considering that we are already on holiday, with high demand of tourism, could offer from the beginning of the month.

Also there were no shows available in the period

Rio might not bring to mind the arts scene. Completed in 1909, this theatre was modelled on the Paris Opera.

We visited the area in our walking tour. This part of Centro is very much dedicated to the cultural part of Rio.

As soon as we saw it, we were reminded of Paris. Beautiful to look at.

The Municipal Theater of Rio is located in the central Marechal Floriano square. Designed by local architect Francisco de Oliveira Passos, it is inspired by the Garnier Opera House in Paris and was built in the first decade of the 20th century. We only saw it from the outside, but even so it is possible to appreciate the beautiful facade with columns, sculptures and paintings.

Going to the Municipal Theatre was a dream and was on my must-see list, I barely believed when I saw that the place was with special activities because of its birthday (115 years old). Unfortunately for the script assembled, I could not make the visit, but I get FREE tickets for a show: the opera Il trittico, and although I only managed to enter the second act, it was wonderful, in the waiting room we were able to have a coffee and appreciate the architecture and decor impeccable. Inside the room, everything very beautiful, traditional, and the show was perfect.
The visit is a dive into art!

We almost skipped the guided tour and just looked at it from the outside, but in the end we had time and took the tour. It is highly recommended to do it, it is beautiful inside and you can take very good photos there!
(The visit is in Portuguese, but understandable and perhaps one of the guides can help you in your language)

We arrived walking by chance, after seeing the cathedral and while we were looking for where to take the transport that would take us back to Copacabana Beach. It has an impressive design, featuring a large dome and golden statues. Majestic columns on its façade make it stand out in the square where it is located. We only saw its exterior, we did not go inside to visit it. It is one of the most important buildings in the city and was inaugurated in 1909, its construction began almost five years earlier.
