Neighborhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

We were lucky that we didn't who up at the earlier time listed on their website, as the tour time was different. We thought the cafe part of the building was quite interesting and unique, while we felt the actual performance hall was not as outstanding as other theatres we've seen elsewhere. It was "ok," just not fabulous. We knowingly took the tour that was in Portuguese in order to see the various rooms.

An absolutely marvelous building of art nouveau, one of a very few in town, and in a really sad condition. It was heartbreaking to see. As it was January, there were no performances, so I had to enjoy the outside. Which I did. I wish they could organise excursions inside even in summer.

It’s a beautiful theatre worth seeing if you’re on a tour of Rio. Worth stopping and taking some pictures of it. The gold accents on the building are real gold.

When you think of Rio, you think of beaches...But I never imagined that Rio had such a beautiful downtown area. It's packed with vendors, and music, and people walking. The Teatro Municipal is right in the middle of everything...The architecture is beautiful, even if just for a picture. And, right infront, there is a restaurant called Amarelinho...They have great drinks and appetizers. it's a great spot for relaxing before you head out into the frenzy of downtown Rio again...Oh, I will let you in on a secret...The downtown area is great for shopping but only during weekdays...We loved it so much that we wanted to return, and decided to go back on Sunday...The place looked like a dead city. There was no one!!! So, if you do decide to go, which I highly recommend, go during the weekdays, especially during Fridays. You will feel the true heart and pace of the Cariocas (Rio natives) in the downtown area.

Visit its homepage before going there and choose a ballet or an opera to buy the tickets. Once there, do not spend much time outside the building because it is a place full of vagabonds. Try to reach the place in advance with the show time, so you will be able to walk imside the building, visit its foyer, the famous carrara marble stairs, the ceiling and other details. Do not miss the tea room, in the first floor.

Tours of this incredibly lavish building cost10 reals (£2.50) But I saw a concert by the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra for 10reals with a student card (half price). So I would recommend experiencing a show first and then deciding if you still need a tour.

Let me try to provide you with a local view from Theatro Municipal. A visit is totally worthy. It was recently renovated, and all the architectural features are shinny and new. The teather has elevator and other facilities.
You can find the most fancy atractions - I was there yestarday to see Momix - but there is also an agenda destinated to the general public, with less costy atractions - you should check the agenda. Those popular sessions usually are held at noon.
You can also experimente a guided tour.
How can you get there? You can take the subway to Cinelândia Station - it would be like 100 meters to the Theatre. The is a parking lot in Passeio Publico (iit's na underground parking lot); totally safe - but a little bit expensive.
Taking a cab is also a good solution - but you might have some trouble to take a cab after the ballet or the concert. There is a lot of cabs at the end of the proram - but there would also be a lot a people... So take seriously the idea of the subway.
Thinking about security - it might be a little frigtenning (after all, your iin a foreign city), but iw would be ok to go to the subway station along with the crowd. Rio de Janeiro is no more dangerous then any major city in the world. Be carefull, but enjoy!!!

I saw the Theatro from the outside first at night and it blew me away. It is beautiful in the dark. I then went for a day time tour and you get to see all the interior, including a few minutes of a rehearsal (we saw a ballet rehearsal) and hear about the history of the building. The tour is not expensive and is well worth it. They allow you to take photos inside during the tour (except for the rehearsal). The interior is as grand as the exterior. The attention to detail in the architecture is something that you just don't see anymore in contemporary structures. A friend who was performing got me free tickets to see an opera and it was also a pleasure to attend a performance there.

We walked from the Museum of tomorrow to the Theatre. We were informed on here that they do tours from 2pm Sunday to Friday for English. We went to the ticket desk ( Tuesday at 12:30) to purchase a ticket and the female ticket assistant said we were unable to come inside or purchase a ticket today as it was Portuguese only. We asked if we could pay for the Portuguese tour so we could go inside but she completely ignored us and started talking to her colleague. Very upsetting and disappointing. We would certainly not discriminate against tourists in the UK. Such a shame as the rest of Rio has been great and welcoming !

The Theatro Municipal is an opera house in the Centro district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in the beginning of the twentieth century, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful and important theatres in the country.Strongly recommended to visit.
