About
One of Brazil’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Rio de Janeiro’s beautiful natural surroundings, Sugarloaf Mountain is a must-see attraction. To reach the mountain's peak, ride aboard the world’s third-oldest cable car, or hike through the Brazilian rainforest if you're up for a challenge. Once at the top of the 1300 feet high mountain, you’ll have panoramic views over the whole city and beyond, as well as a range of restaurants and historical exhibits to explore. Private tours of Sugarloaf Mountain give you a great overview of its geology and history, and are also available as part of full-day tours of the city.

Based on reviews we visited Sugarloaf to watch the sunset around 5pm on a glorious Sunday. Since it was carnaval time we decided to book the skip the line/VIP tickets from the official website for R$194 each (std ticket price is R$104). There is a 10% discount for tickets bought online. Also they now have a 7 day window from the day selected online to complete your visit. I think this is very helpful because you do want to visit on a clear day.
The views are just amazing as everyone mentions. The staff/service was excellent! If you are facing the building, the VIP entrance is on your left. We were taken to a small air conditioned waiting area where there is a clean restroom. We were given a bottle of water each and a wristband so we could skip the line. Since we seemed to be the only ones with those tickets we were the first ones to hop onto the funicular for each leg. Since I am scared of heights I was nervous about the funicular ride but it felt completely safe with amazing views. The ride to the first stop is 3 minutes, so is the ride to the second stop. We visited the cafe on top to watch the sunset, it is a little expensive but totally worth it. I agree with one of the other reviewers, this beat Christ the Redeemer to my surprise.

This was the end point of a tour we had completed for the day and we were hoping to catch the sunset. Initially we entered the main centre to buy tickets and the queues were extraordinary, 200 odd for self service tickets and another 500 or so for internet tickets which were sold out when we checked. (you must need to prepurchase early)
As we neared a turn in the queue, a guide asked if we spoke English and that there is a queue on the other side of the gondolas that is free with no queue but the catch is tickets are 10% dearer. Obviously we chose this option and were straight up in no time.
Photo opportunities are great for the first stop but even better at the tip, although at sunset the top level can be very busy.
The gondolas fit about 60 per trip which is quick, but it's easy to see how busy it could be coming down if you mistime it and get caught with the crowds. There is plenty of snack food and drinks up there, you just need to be prepared for the timing to be right so you aren't caught in queues.
Absolute must see when in Rio

We went in January on a Sunday. I was very scared of the lines and if because it was cloudy that we wouldn't be able to see anything. I only booked tickets the morning we went and got the discount, though it says 10% if do it online, I think really only 5% because if you buy in their kiosk at the mtn you get a 5% discount. We got there around 11 and there wasn't any line for us as we had our tickets but even for those buying it there the line was minimal. It could be because it was supposed to rain that afternoon but there was not a lot of people the whole time we were there. Beautiful breeze, which was a relief from the otherwise hot weather. Give yourself time to walk down to see the monkeys, butterflies, lizard and other creatures in the path, after you go up to sugar loaf on the second cable car. Though it was a little cloudy we had beautiful views and wasn't really cloudy from on top.

It was easy enough to see Sugarloaf by ourselves and I would reccomend doing it this way as opposed to a tour. We used Uber to get to the welcome centre and back again as Sugarloaf had free wifi which was very handy!

We didn't have to que for long to get our tickets and queued just for a few minutes for each cable car. The views are INCREDIBLE from the top of the mountain and show Rio in all of it's glory.

It was nice to walk around and see the city from all angles in between cable cars and there are so little walking trails where we spotted birds and reptiles.

I felt that Sugaloaf was great value for money and should definitely not be missed for anyone visiting the city. We also went to Christ the redeemer, but did this as part of a tour and the crowds were ridiculous. I much preferred the views and experience at Sugarloaf.

Obviously it has the cable car as the views are spectacular. Cable cars were well organised, not overly expensive. The queuing was awkward. We stood in line only to find that queue was only for card payments. When we went to the 'cash' counter there was no queue whatsoever so I suggest you take cash and jump ahead.

There are two stopping points and I would recommend you do both. It is possible to walk up and down to the first cable car stop if that takes your fancy.

At the top there are plenty of food stores, all expensive though a good selection. The local wildlife was friendly, one of the monkeys had decided to sit on the back of the bench right behind our heads. There is a small garden to wander round with snakes (didn't see any) and gekos, it is quite steep getting down and back up again. The toilet facilities were clean. We stayed at the top until a layer of cloud rolled in and surrounded us which was quite a cool feeling and a bit of a bonus.

We stopped at the half way point on the way down for a bite to eat which was okay but not special. There were other options at the same point. The roasted nuts stand smelt delicious.

Getting to the Pão de Açúcar was more of a trial. There is only one bus that runs to the cable car base and that is supposed to run hourly - it doesn't! There are plenty of buses in Rio and I would not hesitate to recommend them expect this route! Take a taxi and save yourselves hanging around.

Being in Rio for the first time we very nervous about venturing out on our own but getting to Sugarloaf could not have been easier. Via taxi you are dropped off at the main entrance, you walk up to a very nice building, purchase your tickets and away you go. We were advised to go early to Sugarloaf to avoid crowds and this was great advise. We had no waits and riding riding the Gondolas was a breeze.

When at the top, be sure to walk down the step ramp (the sign says for sports training) and walk along the path in the forest. It is a loop so you can't get lost.

Then treat yourself to a cool refreshing drink at the outdoor bar with views of the bay and Copacabana!

It is iconic and you have to go no matter what. There are 2 consecutive cable cars but you can stop and relax in the first one. We were short on time to see the sunset and the lines were huge even with advance purchase, we had to give up and return the next day with plenty of time. We buy direct access. Much more expensive but you don't queue at any of the gondolas, both going and returning. Although if you go 2 hours in advance of sunset there are no lines, as the time approaches the intermediate gondola collapses, so if you don't mind paying more I recommend direct access. The views at sunset are spectacular, with Christ the Redeemer next to it, and you see Rio 360º with which you see how huge and beautiful the city, its bays and its beaches are. Above all, choose a day with guaranteed sun, if it is cloudy you will not see anything. That is why the stay in Rio has to be 4-5 days to guarantee that someone will have full sun. A beauty.

BRL 66 to take the ride up. Roide fun, views breathtaking but what's up at the top is light on information/interpretive value and heavy on tourist shops. We got there quite early (just after 8--and our guide told us that this was absolutely necessary to avoid serious crowds. Do it, of course, but the views aren't that much better than any number of free viewpoints that ring this beautiful city.

This was my favourite spot to photograph a sunset or the fog around the mountains and Christ the Redeemer. The cable car is a good value and the hike up Urca is enjoyable so you have options depending on how you want to go up. Be sure to purchase your tickets from Urca to Sugarloaf if you are hiking before you go up if you are paying in cash. Both the trail and the mountain tops are secure and full of amenities like shops, restaurants and extremely well maintained washrooms. I don’t think I have ever seen a public men’s room floor so clean.
