My wife and I did a tour of Rosinha favela in Feb 2016. It was just the two of us, and our guide was Obi. It was definitively a unique experience, that we were glad to do. In order to get to Rocinha, we rode in the back or motorcycles located at the bottom of the hill. That was quite a ride. Obi was an excellent guide who is born and raised in Rocinha. He took his time to explain the history, culture, people and the present of Rocinha. Because he live there, this is very knowledgeable, and he answered our million questions with patience and insight. We even visited his house, which is well known hostel Rosinha Guesthouse (google it), and met his mom. The views from his rooftop were breathtaking. He took us through the narrow streets of Rosinha, to the library, and different parts, finishing with lunch at a local restaurant with excellent food. Even though it was just two people, the tour lasted 4 hours and was well paced. I would highly recommend visiting Rosinha, you get a different insight about Rio and Brazil that is hard to see from the beaches, or looking at the favelas from afar. We found Rocinha to be a very safe place, we took many photos, trying to be respectful of the people living there. There's is an order and rich culture in the middle of the thousands of stacked-up houses, and people are trying their best to make the most of their lives, and they are trying to live normal and fulfilling lives. We are glad we got a chance to discover this, I'd recommend others do it too. (*Rodrigo, who runs CaRioca Free Culture and answers the emails, does not live in Brazil, and does not give tours, other people to do it. This was okay though, because Obi was a great tour guide.)

My boyfriend and I did a tour of Rocinha with Obi, and it was amazing! It was the most memorable experience of our entire trip to Rio. I highly recommend doing the tour with Obi. Obi is from the favela; he's very knowledgeable and really cares about his community. We met him outside a hotel in Leblon. Then, we took a public bus and a motorbike taxi up to the top of the favela (the moto taxi was super fun and a great introduction to the way locals get around the favela, but if you don't want to do it, you can ride a bus up the favela too). From there, we walked all around the favela and down to the bottom, stopping by Obi's home along the way. Obi is an amazing guide and the view of the favela from his guesthouse was incredible! We learned more about Rio in those several hours with Obi than in the rest of our entire trip!

+Extensive tour of the favelas +The bike ride is a totally awesome experience +Assistant guide Obe was excellent +Both Obe and Ricardo spoke excellent english. -Our guide Ricardo was redundant in his explanations, contradicted himself, spoke more about his family which was irrelevant to the bigger picture -We did not get to actually see a home in the favela -The pacification process was poorly explained and left most confused -On my prior trips to Rio the favela tours explained life thought a social and economic system of the favelas. This was missing in the tour Overall a confusing, disjointed experience with lots of redundancies and contradictions.

I am sorry that you feel this way. We never promise to anyone that resident of Rocinha would open their house to visitors Can you explain how I was contradicted to myself? Also, what redundant explanations that I give to you? contradicted myself? "Spoke more about his family which was irrelevant to the bigger picture" My family is one of thousand that resides inside of the favela for about 3 to 4 generations that never leave the place, same as many other families that rised the kids under the control of drug dealer and guns Forgive me if meeting my family and friends wasn't enough to you!! Other tour company would probably show you violence, and other things that may be interested for you, as you seems to really wanted to see drug dealer and guns! The pacification never was the point of the visit As you also misunderstood!! I just highly some of it as my focus was on the people and the real affect of it Hope that this makes things easier and clean for you to understand. Pacification and drug dealer wasn't the top number one on the tour but making people feeling safe and welcome inside the Favela Again Apologies for the inconveniences Rodrigo, not "Ricardo" 😂😁 Best regards

Rodrigo is an awesome tour guide. Very personal met his mother and friend, and even got to see inside their homes. Rodrigo makes you feel at ease and answers all of the questions you have honestly. Rodrigo is passionate about his home, and that comes across on the tour. The local people are very friendly, and wanted to shake my hand and say hello. The tour has spectacular views, the local children danced samba for us. We even got to try some local delicacies acai berry shakes etc It was an experience like no other, and a true insight into the favela life. Definitely recommend this tour. One of the highlights of my time in Rio

We went on a cold and rainy day on this favela tour through Rocinha, and despite the weather and lack of views still had a fantastic time. Rodrigo was a lovely guide and managed to include everyone in a larger than usual group (about 20). Learnt a lot about the issues surrounding pacification, gentrification and the lack of opportunities for people in the favela but also about the way of life and how despite these issues community spirit is still strong. Also learnt a bit about Rodrigo himself who is moving to the US, so from July on the tours will be run by his friend Obertan and his brother. Highly highly recommended.
