Neighborhood: Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”

Overall, Vermelha Beach aka the red beach is an underrated beach with amazing views and is another worthwhile place to visit for those in the area.

It is literally within walking distance of the Sugarloaf cable car, and could be a nice place to check out before or after going up the mountain.

Compared to more popular beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, it calmer and more relaxing vibe. Vendors aren't as aggressive and the beach is even quieter on weekdays.

It also doesn't hurt that it is located right next to a military base and police headquarter - perhaps giving the tourist an extra sense of security.

To get a better idea of vibe on the beach - check out my Sugarloaf Mountain video on my Youtube channel by clicking the link in my bi.

I went to Rio in March. Yes , Copacabana and the other beaches nearby were fine - but it's difficult to swim in them because the breaking wave is so strong. I visited SL mountain which was amazing and I was so glad I took my towel in case I found a beach and wanted to cool off.Vermelha (red) beach didn't look that impressive from the top of SL mountain but I was totally blown away by it's beauty and ambience when I bathed. The sea was a beautiful green/blue with a gentle swell and I had to pinch myself at the beauty of the place with SL dominating the backround - just breath taking. I've been to 50+ countries inc. places renowned for beaches - but this beach just hit the spot for me - outstanding. I don't feel the need to go back to Rio - I believe I have 'done it'. However , I feel sad that I will probably never experience Vermelha beach again. I cannot recommend it more highly - please go !

This beach is surrounded by green. The sea is very deep. If you take 3 steps, you go underwater ahah There are " barracas" ( tents or huts) on the beach where vendors rent beach umbrella, chairs, food and beverages. I recommend that you don't go to this beach on weekends because it's full of people. Near this beach, there is a trail and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes . Praia vermelha is close to Sugar Loaf Mountain where you can take a cable car to reach the top of the mountain.

Praia Vermelha is a Gorgeous beach next to Sugar Loaf cable car. The views of Sugar loaf is so beautiful. It is a public beach frequented by locals. I felt pretty safe there.

When you are going up Sugar loaf mountain you should take a diversion to Vermelhe beach which is just beyond the cable car station. Its a small beach but when we were there on a weekday morning there was only about 10 people there. The view over the beach to Sugar loaf directly above is great. Unlike the bigger beaches there is nobody walking along every few minutes selling something, although there are some snack stalls in the vicinity and a fancy restaurant at one end. Some reviews say the beach isn't clean but I didn't think this at all.
At the other end of the beach there is a forest walk along the sea. There is wildlife including monkeys, if you have food they will soon find you! From this path you can actually walk up Morro da Urca for 45 minutes and skip the first stage of the cable car.
There seems to be a military school in the area, there was a band playing when we were there. The beach is a lot busier at the weekend, nearly all Brazilians, not too many tourists.
The most important advice for any beach review in Rio is that the sun is much stronger than the temperature would suggest, I hardly ever burn, but I did in Rio, so be careful.

Not too crowded on weekdays. Public restrooms just off the beach. Limited food vendors but a very nice restaurant at the end of the beach. You can take the bus or a taxi. It's just a short way past the entrance to the Pão de Azucar aerial tram.

Ascending by the cable car up to the Sugar mountain you see below you the beautiful beach of the Red Beach, the Vermelha. The panoramic views from the sugar mountain are much extensive and much more enjoyable than the panoramic views seen from the Corcovado. When reaching to the base to the cable car do not miss the views of the Red Beach. This beach is less visited than the bigger and longer beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Copacabana and Ipanema but it has the beauty of being surrounded by nearby hills and next island and it reminds the magnificent beach behind Cabana hotel in Kho Phi Phi Thailand. You can visit the nearby restaurant or its terrace beside the Red Beach and enjoy both the views of the beach and the sugar mountain as well. You can grasp it while looking at the attached photos. I preferred this intimate and beautiful beach much more the other beaches.

such a sceneic beach with views of the sugar loaf mountain that are breath taking. the beach itself is very clean the staff that work in drink huts are very polite even though we dont speak a word of Portuguese. we got a uber from out air bnb which literally cost us £4 for a 20 min journey. we went to Copacabana beach and thought it was brilliant however this is more private and more for the locals, to give the feel of the real Brazil.

Red Beach is locally called ‘Praia Vermelha’ or Vermelha Beach. It is located in Guanabara Bay in South Atlantic Ocean, close to Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its approach is in front of Sugarloaf Mountain Cable Car Ticket Office through Praca (Park, Square) General Tiburcio. It is called Red beach as the sand on the coast becomes pink with the rays of the sun in the afternoon. It offers a wonderful view of Sugarloaf Mountain and the traffic of cable cars running up and down on cables from ground station to Morro da Urca upto Pao de Acucar. It is a small beach as compared with other beaches of Rio de Janeiro such as Copacabana, Ipanema, etc. There are many cafes, bars, cabins and shops selling snacks around the beach. It is a beautiful romantic beach all year round, duly protected by hills. There are no strong winds or large waves.
