A bit of a way from the main Copacabana/Ipanema beaches but worth the trip for sure. A bit of a hike to get down to but worth the effort. Bring water/beer/etc as there weren't many vendors and a plastic bag to put your phone/camera in as the waves can catch you off guard on the rocks and you could loose/soak your stuff without the bag. Didn't notice many shady looking folks here like at other more popular beaches. For those of us who don't like the smell of weed, heads up that many people at this beach really do!

This hidden beach is my absolute favorite beach in Rio, make sure to check the tides before you go! The access is easiest by car, entrance to the beach is via a condominium just next to the Costa Brava club.

We asked around for an off-city nice beach in Rio and two names came out: Joatinga and Prainha. Given that Joatinga is considerably closer, we decided to go there and took the 557 bus that dropped us off in a sort of deserted road, with no indication whatsoever to the beach. We followed out instinct and went down towards the sea, had to trespass through a private neighborhood, and got to a cliff close to the sea. We could see the "beach" from there, which at this hour was completely under the rambling waves. Given the long way we had already gone, we decided to risk our lives, climb down through the slippery rocks, go through the now completely flooded "beach" to the only dry tiny bit of sand, only to find an abandoned flip flop, some beer bottles and some sort of cave, with indications that somebody might have been living there. Can't say if our luck was bad or what, but I cannot (and will not) recommend a visit here. Gotta say though, the view from above was something.

Joatinga Beach is very small and dangerous, which makes it very unfriendly to 95% of the people. The beach is an extension of a private condominium of houses built on the top of small cliff. If you live in one of these houses or you are a guest of someone who lives in one of them, you may use a private path made by the residents. Otherwise, you need to drive to the top of the cliff, park your car and go down the rocks to reach the sand, as there is no pathway indicated. This is just the less dangerous part of the adventure. The quick rise of the tide during the day and the wild waves may give a hard time to those hypnotised by the beach's beauty and exclusiveness. Rush back to the top as soon as you notice the tide is going up! Make sure you know the direction of the sea current before you dive and if you do it, stay away from the rocks. This is a place for good and experimented swimmers.

Joatinga beach is a tiny strip of sand, hidden by the rocky coastline between Sao Conrado and Barra da Tijuca. There is only one bus line (number 557) which serves this area. To reach the beach, one must hike down the steep rocks, albeit along an easy trail. This is a charming little beach, devoid of deafening stereos all too common on other beaches in Rio. The water is clear and the sand is clean. Caution is required on rough days, as the waves can be treacherous to the inexperienced.

Incredible view, the beach is very clean and beautiful. You can go with bus and walk 10 minutes or car. It is difficult for those who have difficulty because of the rocks and lil track.

Because it's hard to get there this place is very preserved. You have a good view of the beach from the top of the mountain. It's free to get in but you won't find any infrastructure as bars or toilets, So bring your own drinks and snacks, and PLEASE take your trash back with you.
