Worth a quick trip if you are in the area

This is a nice little park where can kill an hour or two if you are in the area. There are several nice trails through the forest near the lagoon, and there are some turtles and alligators in cages. Supposedly you can also see monkeys or some other native Brazilian mammals if you get lucky, although I didn't see any.

Having said that, it's a long ways from the city center, and I can't recommend a trip out to Recreio just to visit this park. If you are already in the area to visit the beaches or the Sitio Burle Marx, this park can be a nice diversion. But don't bother unless you are already in the area (and it's nothing spectacular even if you are in the area).

Chico mendes i situated in the quiet and beautiful neighbourhood of Recreio. It is free, but closed on Mondays as most municipal attractions. The park is pretty, bathrooms are OK (you find the paper on top on the defunct dryer), and they have a small collection of alligators and turtles in cages a few 100 feet from the playground.
The REAL attraction is the small trail - the smallest being 73 metres - here your trip will be disturbed by the lizard that roam freely in the park. The are up to 1 metre long and it's quite shocking when they cross the trail before you. Recommendable as a free and fun attraction - combine with Recreio beach or skateboarding / surfing.
