After years of construction and political disputes, "Cidade das Artes" finally opened its doors in 2013. It is a huge cultural complex envisaged by French acclaimed architect Christian Portzamparc, comprising two main theaters - "Grande Sala" (1250 seats) and "Teatro de Câmara" (450 seats), plus a number of multiple-use halls, an art gallery, a café and a huge parking area. It has a busy programme, having already staged some of the most popular musical in Rio's theater scene. But its location, at the very end of "Barra da Tijuca" quarter in Rio de Janeiro, is rather a problem. It is very far from the rest of the city and reaching it is not an easy task. The nearest subway station is far from it and buses are not so simple, principally for foreigners. Taxis are the best and most recommended - but expensive - option at any visit and on both ways. As it is quite far from "Copacabana" or "Ipanema" quarters and traffic on rush hours is quite heavy, allow at least two hours to arrive at "Cidade das Artes". Enjoy!

Participated in an international event called "PORTUGAL 360º", and the experience was very good.
Good organization, great music shows, and the space is very nice.

Privileged to be able to have had a private show and dinner in Samba City where members of the best Samba schools prepare for their shows during the year. Crafting their own floats and costumes at the school this is a wonderful alternative to the 'soccer' world.

The rhythm and colourful costumes enchanted and a local Brazilian feast was something to behold. A truly amazing experience of local culture and and culinary delights.

The Cidade das Artes is a great place for concerts, especially when you live in the neighborhood. Easy access by car or bus. However, by car it is not so easy to find the way into the parking lot. After parking the car finding the entrance is the next challenge, since there are no signs at all where the entrance is to be found. Once on the first floor (take the escalator, if you find it, or walk up one of the big ramps) just follow the mass of people and you'll find the entrance. I went to a classical concert and absolutely loved the place. Big modern theater (over 1.000 seats) with great acoustics. Worth a visit when there's a good concert!

Very grand architecture in the International Style but not very good when winds whip up and wreak havoc all over. This building houses five different structures linked togetherby a large concrete deck on the second floor and covered over by an equally grand cement roof with artsy ventilations too boot. The main hall is akin to opera houses of Europe. A second theater is also located here and is equally grand. Then there are small audio-visual rooms for break up sessions during conferences or for smaller performances. The ground floor is a void deck with reflecting pools. The building itself looks like it stands on huge stilts that fly about, never in straight lines----you won't find straight lines here.

Finding the entrance with the taxi was near impossible. We drove around 30 minutes before we found the way in. Why? Because only if you already know how to get there (stay in the middle lane), will you see the signs. Once you get on the wrong track, you can circle the center forever without seeing a sign. It is strange that the organizers did not think of putting up sufficient signs.
Once we were in the parking lot, there were no signs either. But eventually we made it.
The building is huge and impressive. An escalator and elevator(s) get you to the performance hall level. The views from that level are spectacular. However the building forms a large wind canal. So watch out.
The performance hall is huge, built like a giant movie theater with strongly rising rows of chairs which are very comfortable. There is also seating in tiers on the sides. Unfortunately the acoustics of the hall are tinny, not good for classical music, even performed by a large (and excellent!) orchestra. The sound system on the other hand works well as we discovered when the announcer nearly blew our ears out. Not sure why they assumed everybody in the hall was deaf.
The floors of the concert hall are hardwood. Moving one's feet during the concert produces squeeks.
Leaving the site proved to be another adventure, since there are no taxi stands and the access to the large bus station is not yet ready. Since there are shopping centers around this site, taxis are in the vicinity but you can't get to them. Eventually we walked through some dirt to the road to flag down a taxi.
Overall: The architecture is impressive. The logistics still leaves a lot to be desired.
