Neighborhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

A really beautifull 1900s building with wooden floors and a an amazing lift that you can ride and get back in time, despite the building itself is worth going to enjoy the exibitions that they host.

The building dates from 1922. Always holds interesting exhibitions and stamp fares. For over 50 years was the main post office in downtown Rio de Janeiro. One of my favorite places in town.

Like old buildings, wooden floors and curved staitcase or a real 1900's green and brass lift then ensure you visit this building if you are in the area (worth it for the Centro Cultural Banco do Brazil (going to get a very good review) immediately next door) in addition you will see a suprise exibition that you may really like - I saw really great Japanese sculpturesby Yuktaka Toyota. Very interesting Bar/ Restaurant opposite - did not try out but looked popular.

This building has a stamp fare at weekends and during the week allows access to various exhibitions. We were lucky enough to see 2 that were excellent. One related to the Sacred Family - many historical religious sculptures and statues. Then onto a photo exhibition depicting the life of Rio and its people. As an added bonus all of this is accessed by a fantastic old fashioned lift all operated by a charming lady lift driver.
