Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Nice venue for expos, well situated in the heart of downtown, easy access by underground. Not large but adequate for art expositions, worth watching because some nice activities may happen there.

When in Cinelandia we would often check the exhibits in Caixa Cultural. We enjoyed exhibits of Brazilian artist of pottery sculpture, of photographic exhibit of people sleeping outdoors, music, amd motion picture. There is a movie theater here as well. what a great thing for a bank to offer. Free admission and friendly staff.

If you are in the downtown area on a weekday, it is worth stopping into the Caxia Cultural Center to see what is on display since admission is free. Some exhibits are very good such as a exhibition of Henri Matisse’ Jazz I saw there. I addition to different visual arts displays, they also feature films.

"Caixa Cultural Rio" is one of the most actives cultural centers in Rio de Janeiro! It's amazing to stroll along its galleries and theaters. Sponsored by "Caixa Econômica Federal", a public bank, it brings to Rio the best exhibitions travelling around Brazil. I went there twice this year, attending two fantastic temporary exhibitions: "Frida Kahlo: Conexões entre Mulheres Surrealistas no México" (Jan 30 - Mar 27, 2016) and "Carlos Scliar, da reflexão à criação" (Jul 5 - Aug 21, 2016). In general, there is no charge for temporary exhibitions and tickets for movies and plays are sold at very reasonable prices. Senior citizens (over 60 years old) have a 50% discount on any purchased ticket. Check its site ("Programação") and organize your own schedule. "Caixa Cultural Rio" is easily reached by subway (Carioca Station) or by Rio's new tramway system (VLT). Enjoy!

First time I went there was to see Frida Kahlo's exposition and loved it. Place has a nice atmosphere and is easy to get to: just in the centre of Rio de Janeiro city. Besides the main exposition, there were lots of other permanent as well as temporary expos to see.

I went there to visit Frida Kahlo´s exhibition. I booked online and it was very calm and organized the visiting. The exhibition itself was amazing and I had a great time. There was also an exhibition of Leminski´s works, really nice. The place is good, staff is friendly and I recommend keeping an eye in their agenda!

A very comprehensive exhibit of Frida Kahlo's works and influence in women of her time. There is a good amount of her paintings and also of other Mexican painters of her time.

This art gallery is downtown Rio, so traffic wise it makes sense to go on a weekend. The exhibitions are always very unique and interesting! People of all ages gather here to appreciate art in a fine, air conditioned - not to big gallery!

Just around the corner from the front entrance to this downtown bank is an exhibition space that is free to view. There were two excellent and very different exhibitions on view when I was there in August. The first featured an extensive series of sometimes morbid drawings and paintings by Salvador Dali based on Dante’s Divine Comedies, and the second was a delightful exhibition of cartoons, paintings, and designs from Argentinian illustrator Liniers.
