Not a must see but we combined the walk (safe) around the bay with a visit to Sugarloaf and Praia Vermelha. Loads of fishermen dotted around the wall and couples strolling enjoying the views to Corcovado.

The view from coast towards a port with many touristic yachts is really nice and I personally love some bars and restaurants in the area. However, for me the main attraction is the famous URCA casino, after which URCA-process in astrophysics is named. It is partially restored, but some of it is still in the form of ruins with trees... How to start a review of a place that you love? Urca is a cozy neighborhood, a small town in the middle of a big city, surrounded by water and a huge rock in the middle, the famous Sugar Loaf. You feel safe here, because its a military site, with one entrance and exit. The houses are spectacular and its... More

Water here looked a little on the dark and dirty side compared to the ocean at Ipanema. Beware! There is a small beach just below the rocky point that separates the two beaches and this was relatively quiet and un crowded. Otherwise it is like being on an ant hill.

Great place to watch the sun go down over Christo whilst having a cold beer from across the street. Old town, some cool bohemian architecture.

Due to its one street access and presence of the army at its end, Urca has the lowest assault rate in the city. The view of the Guanabara bay is gorgeous and beside nicely maintained houses of last centuries, has many options of good, calm restaurants and bars. Best place to forget big cities stress.

Not an area typically on the visitor's map of must sees but it should be. Quaint but lively and a really interesting cross-section of youth and establishment enjoying Rio life to it's fullest

Stroll all the way along the harbour, with it's small boats, and join the locals for a beer and snacks sitting on the harbour wall underneath the shadows of the big trees while you're are watching the statue of Crist the Reedemer at a distance on top of São Corcovado and Praia de Botafogo in front. In Urca, which are... More

Staying in Urca

Neighborhood Profile
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”
