Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Great place but our credit card number was stolen!

Great place - very local with great music. However, our credit card number was stolen & someone charged thousands of dollars on it. We know it happened at this club because it was the last time we used the card before leaving the country and someone else in our group had the same problem. Don't give them your credit card & let them take it from your site!

REALLY CARIOCA
Jan 2012
Differently from many bars round Lapa, this one seems to have more local customers and fewer tourists, which is great. The food and drinks are also cheaper! There are dance teachers around who give a great show and may even dance with you! We saw Grupo Semente, simply great!

Samba !
Cool bar, usually packed with people just enjoying themselves. No teenagers, ages 30 to 40.

Great Samba Lesson and a wonderful time
Apr 2011
We were excited about our private samba lesson with Isnard, but he even beat our expectations! In just about an hour, our hesitant husbands (the lesson was for 2 couples) were having fun and really relaxed, trying new steps and talking to Isnard and his colleague. The lesson took part in a studio that was going to host a samba dance session that night/ club that Isnard co-owns. He also choreographs their school's Samba festival performance every year.

Overall, we had a great time: we danced, we talked, we laughed while getting a feel for Isnard's passion and history of samba, as well as some understanding of Samba carnival preparations that take place every year. His English was great and the only word of advice I have is to ask Isnard to meet you outside the studio. In our case, the taxi driver could not find it and drove around the block 3 times. The area did not look very nice and we were getting concerned, but Isnard came out and the worries were gone.

We are not dancers and just wanted to get a feel and personal experience while in the area. The expectations were surpassed by far!

Fantastic Friendly atmosphere and great service
Dec 2010
Saw Teresa Christina here in Dec on a recommendation and had a great night - all the windows on one side open up to allow night air in and all the buildings opposite are lit up to give a dramatic outook. The band were superb with it seemed many people knowing every word, so we had surround sound at times.
To improve it could serve choppe (draft beer) or the bottles of Bohemia - the tastiest available beer.
