About
Unidos da Tijuca Samba-School, the third oldest samba school in Rio de Janeiro has been presenting an interesting all year long attraction: “Backstage Tour of a Carnival Parade”This is the first time a samba-school in Rio “opens up” their secrets, and guide tourist through the backstage activities. Tourists are guided by the official Carnival researcher of the Samba school and see all phases of the carnival parade preparation. The attraction starts with the explanation of the parade theme, and then moves on to each step of the parade building: the conception of theme, design sketches of the costumes, mock-up floats, the floats assembly area , carnival costume factory, and finally the quality area. At the end of the program, visitors see a pocket show of the samba-school, with real samba dancers and samba percussionists. The attraction is a very good option where the foreigner can learn a bit how the magic of the carnival in Rio is done. Definitely, a must if the visitors is interested in visual arts, architecture or carnival itself. The “Backstage Tour at Unidos da Tijuca” attraction lasts for 2 and half hours and can be scheduled Mondays through Saturdays through Unidos da Tijuca Marketing Department.

Alternative way to spend some time in Rio

The tour guide is very knowledgeable about the history of carnival. You can see the floats, dance a little bit, try the costumes, I had a lot of fun!

Not much to see unless it's carnival time
Jan 2015 • Couples
We went to have a look and there is a small group of gift shop whereby you can take pictures with costumes for a small fee but otherwise don't make a special trip there unless it's carnival time

good time
Dec 2014 • Friends
Our company organized a meeting in Rio and one of the night’s entertainments was here, the place is very well organized, the tour was great and listening to the explanations about carnival parade and all the business around it was very interesting. Finishing the night playing “real” instruments, like in a samba school was great. Very nice the experience of being conducted by young kids with a very good musical ear and all organized by the “Mestre”. The dinner at the “botequim” style restaurant was a fantastic touch.

Interesting and fun afternoon of Carnival stuff
Apr 2014 • Couples
I would love to see Carnival but it was wrong time of year so this was as close as we could get! I loved learning about the work that goes into producing a carnival entry. Seeing the concept art and then the final versions of the costumes and the floats was interesting, but for me the fun was more caipirinhas then learning to play some carnival music and seeing the dancers in their carnival gear. Good insight into Carnival and a fun ending. When i do get to Carnival i will be supporting Tijuca x

Spectacular time with limitations
Feb 2013 • Friends
If you are in your 20's, this time in Rio is terrific. There are lots of spectacular views, gorgeous costumes and parades, and lots of beer. However, because of the immense crowds, it is difficult to navigate the streets because people are about 8 - 12 deep. We had some great meals at restaurants right in the downtown area where everything was happening. Because we went with a group of 35, we had reservations, but there also many people off the streets that walked in and were immediately served. Besides all the Carnival happenings, there are many tourist attractions such as the Redeemer Christ Statue which looms over the city and we traveled up Sugar Loaf and Cordova Mts. to see the sights from high above the city. There are also fabulous beaches and many great hotels. One caveat: do not travel in pairs but try to go in a group. We had several couples in our group who went off by themselves who were mugged for their cameras, jewelry, and money . My favorite attractions were the two mountains.

Very good! Had a great time
• Our company organized a meeting in Rio and one of the night’s entertainments was here. I must confess that I was not expecting too much, since I am Brazilian, from Rio, despite of the fact that I don’t live here. I am not a big samba fan. Well…good surprise, the place is very well organized, the tour was great and listening to the explanations about carnival parade and all the business around it was very interesting. Finishing the night playing “real” instruments, like in a samba school was great. Very nice the experience of being conducted by young kids with a very good musical ear and all organized by the “Mestre”. The dinner at the “botequim” style restaurant was a fantastic touch.
