Neighborhood: Urca
Urca is one of the oldest areas in Rio. Known for its incredible views of the city, the neighbourhood runs along Guanabara bay, providing visitors with an opportunity to watch the sunset from one of Rio’s greatest natural treasures: Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar). It is said that the locals in Urca are “bon vivant,” which is one of the reasons the area attracts people of all styles and ages. Urca is the perfect place to take a stroll and appreciate the area’s beautiful architecture, enjoy a cocktail and some delicious seafood pastries at a bar, or bring a bottle of wine and enjoy it while sitting anywhere along the stone seawall known as the “mureta.”

Urca has an amazing view! Hiking up the mountain instead of taking the cable car is a great way to save money, save huge cable car lines and to enjoy the nature. This trail is safe as far as some locals said and I experienced, and it takes about 40 minutes to reach the top.
Tip: If you would like to watch the sunset, you can hike up and after 7:30pm the cable car is free to go back down.

This trail is pretty short, well maintained and safe as it's right next to the army buildings. You should take from 20 to 40 minutes to climb, there are quite some steps so I reccomend this only for persons who are fit, or if you are not, you will have to stop a couple times along the path to catch yourt breath.
After getting to the top you are able to buy tickets to the next mountain with no lines (R$59 BRL on Jan 2019) and after 07:30 pm yo can ride down for free, just say you have no tickets when you get to the turnstiles to go down.

Hike takes between 30 to 40 minutes. You will be surrounded by the tropical (Atlantic) forest and you are likely to perspire a lot. If you are lucky you may see marmosets (small monkeys).
