Less than an hour away from Rio, one reaches Paquetá island by ferry from Praça XV for less than 7 reais; timetable can easily be found on the CCR Barcas page.
One can walk around the whole island with no fear whatsoever, to enjoy a feeling of Brazilian's countryside despite being so near a metropolis and with calm waters all around; not all beaches are clean enough for swimming.
Some restaurants and even guesthouses are there, allow yourself to 'get lost' on the island as a break from Rio, a real must!!

The island of Paquetá is located in the northeastern interior of the Guanabara Bay, in the Paquetá neighborhood, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main way to get to the island is through the boats that leave from Place XV.

One of my favorite walks, busy in the Estação das Barcas area but a few meters away peace is present and it doesn't even look like the capital, Rio de Janeiro.
