It is good that there is a replica of Dumont's 14 Bis aeroplane and that it is in Petropolis. The plane itself is OK but it is a bit matter of fact. There is a really good museum at Casa Santos Dumont which explains it's creation and more about the inventor. Do get to see this if you are in Petropolis. By doing so it puts the replica into perspective.

The Brazilians have a way of immortalizing their heroes and this little plaza is a case in point. There, mounted on a high plinth, is a replica of the airplane used by the inventor and aviator Santos Dumont used to fly circles around the competition in Paris in the very early 1900's. The brass plaque at the base, however, says nothing about the airplane and everything about the municipal leaders responsible for the monument's sponsorship.
