Great views on the drive from Rio. This pink palace was home to the former Royal Family. The Crown Jewels are beautifully displayed. However, bags must be left in lockers and overshoes worn. These can be cumbersome, especially when climbing the stairs. Stay close to your guide, as larger groups cannot easily hear commentary and rooms are small. An experience indeed.

Historical city with amazing urban and architectural monuments. It is an important document of a period of Brazilian history. Nevertheless it hasn't been taken care properly. Except for the Cathedral, which is under restoration, everything is very deteriorated, including the Emperor's Summer Palace.
Nature of the region is astonishing and those who enjoy hiking and visiting national parks will enjoy the surroundings. But the city is not worth visiting.

The city center is a historic journey in the heart of our country. Each floor is remote from the era. Each house has its own history, art and architecture. An unparalleled sensation. It's a good idea to do everything on foot calmly. Knowing every detail

After reading the many positive reviews I had great expectations about this place. But after my visited, I wonder of I have visited the same place as all the writers of the positive reviews.
Indeed, the city has a great imperial museum certainly worth visiting and a number of other buildings look good as well. But the city itself is not worth a visit. The traffic is chaotic and finding a parking place is almost impossible.
But if you are lucky enough to find a parking place ( for R$ 8 per hour), finding the places you want to visit by foot is the next challenge. There are hardly any signs. I wasn't able to find the once I had on my list.
The place smells to the gasoline of the many, many cars and busses.
I have visited cities all over the world, but this was one of the worst.

Olk it rains a lot more here than in Rio, but a beautiful town near a huge national park and a great place to escape from Rio at just an hour away. Gives you an idea of the history of Portuguese rule, some fine restaurants and quite Germanic in its overall feel - a lot of Germans live here so they say. A gent we met outisde the cathedral gave us a 3-hour guided tour (for a small fee) by car (handy owing to the rain) and we learned a lot from chatting to him. A place to go back to.

I went there to visit the former summer palace of Emperor Pedro II, it is a museum now with a log of royal collections. We also went to the Cathedral and Crystal Palace. Good place away from Rio.

Anybody interested in Brazilian history should see this place. Woncerful for strolls, especially along a boulevard surrounded by 19th-century homes of the members of the imperial court. The fairly modest imperial palace is nevertheless impressive, and a very worthwhile visit. There is also a lovely little restaurant on the palace grounds.

Amazing homes and buildings in a very European designed in the mountain tropical rainforest. I was thinking that I was in Portugal or maybe Spain or Italy.

The historical centre of Petrópolis is a quite nice place to visit with no hurry. Century old houses yield a feeling that you left the usual daily stress to entered a whole new life. You can just wonder how was life back then, when only means of transportation were chariots and horses.
One definitely should visit the cathedral and walk through Avenida Koeller before reaching Restaurante Leopoldina. It's not cheap, but it worths the price.
