We wanted to do a hike when we were staying in Paraty. We did not want a big organised tour, so we researched ourselves a bit. This is how I would recommend to do the Pao Acucar hike, which gives you an INCREDIBLE view of the saco do mamangua fjords.

We took a local bus (around 4 reais pp) from Paraty bus station to Paraty Mirim (around 30-40 min).

There was a local guide waiting, Mateus, a very friendly young independent guide. He took us with his boat for a 15 min ride and then we started the hike to the top. It is a moderate hike, around 1 h straight to the top. The view is amazing. We were the only ones doing the hike. We enjoyed Every minute of it! We paid 150 reais for the two of us. The weather was not amazing, but Mateus proposed to go around with the boat to surrounding beaches after, Which we declined because of the weather but I am sure that must be very nice (and all included).

We were so pleasantly surprised by the kind and very experienced Mateus, who took us everywhere so quickly and gave us explanations whenever he could. Compared to what was offered us in the hotel, he was also very affordable! I added a picture of his business card, since I Could not find him on tripadvisor. I cannot recommend him enough!

We went on a trip with Paraty Explorer from Paraty via bus and boat. It is a beautiful area. The walk up 500m to the top takes up to 90mins and and under an hour down. Not an easy one so be fit!

There were problems from the beginning when we were given the wrong info about meeting the boat. When we did get there, the so-called guide spoke almost no English and had no interest in talking to us. She said about 15 sentences during our time with her. We sped to the first beach, which was clean, and were given snorkel masks. It is a good thing we all knew how to snorkel because the guide didn't even get out of the boat, let alone help anyone. There was EXACTLY one type of striped fish at that murky beach. We floated and swam around for a while, but there was nothing to do but sit and wait for the driver to get ready to go. The second stop was a small, dirty beach with NO snorkeling. We were made to wait there hoping we could get going soon. The third stop was at a "restaurant" where we could buy lunch. We walked up a hill for a nice view, but we were afraid to eat anything except french fries because of the sanitary conditions of that stop. The scenery was nice on the high speed boat, but this was a waste of our time and money. We do not recommend this trip or company for anyone

Paraty is a town with great potential. But, it has grown too quickly for its own good, and the city hasn't been able to keep up with the influx of visitors. The streets are terrible, the restaurant food is too expensive, and the quality of goods and services is not worth what you pay for. The hotels suck too.

I really enjoyed this trip. I like companies that use local transport so was pleased to get the bus to Paraty Mirim. Some people complain about the bus because the road is unsaved for part of the way but it is fine. Then a short boat trip before we climbed the hill. The climb is steep but only takes an hour and the views from the top are fantastic and well worth the effort. Back at the bottom we had a very good fish lunch - not included but only 30 real.

Rodrigo was an excellent guide - friendly, knowledgeable and spoke excellent English.

I would recommend this trip.

The entire trip to and from Manangua was just a blast! It began with us riding the bus to the end of the route (I can't remember the exact name of the stop) and then walking to the beach, finding a boat owner and then negotiating a rate to take us to the base of the fjord. It was tough because I was speaking spanish to his portuguese, but we managed to understand each other enough to get a decent rate (i think we paid about 130 reais total, he wanted 200 initially). The boat ride maybe took a half hour and was incredibly gorgeous. Our driver took us to the trailhead and then told us when to be back, from then on it was just us, the rainforest and the mountain. The climb was steep, so bring a good amount of water! When we got to the top I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The views are simply incredible. I remember thinking how lucky I was to be able to experience something like that when I was walking around on the summit. I highly recommend taking a day and doing this, you'll never forget it!

A cool place to chill and relax away from the crowds - go by boat from Parati. No infrastructure whatsoever - that is the charm - bring lots of bug cream as the Maroims are nasty at full moon
one of my favorite places to look at the night sky and dream

Isolated, silent, clean water, high mountains and native community.
We rented a house with friends, rode Kaiaks and fish. There was no electricity and no mosquitos!
