Poorly maintained city, impassable on foot and by car. We had a problem with the company that takes care of the city's parking spaces, as they charged much more time than we used. Terrible service in local shops and horrible beaches, with no conditions for swimming. Do not use the Paraty Cunha road, as it is very dangerous and unsafe, in addition to the danger of being separated by reckless local drivers and without consideration for those who do not yet know the road, in fact, not only on this road, local drivers are extremely reckless and ignorant .

Like lots of places around the world, a victim of it's own success and expanding fame. It is not what it was 14 years ago. Yes it is still a colonial town with original cobblestone streets but it seems every building is now a restaurant, shop or hotel, not a normal town, not the locals sitting outside their houses chatting of years ago. Saturday night the streets were absolutely packed with people, restaurants full, noise everywhere, the romantic quiet restaurants now swamped with noise. And the owners. Now 10% cover charge, 10% tip, maybe tax as well, all on top of high charges, more than Rio for average food and poor service. At least by Sunday evening lots of day trippers and weekenders had departed and it was once again a more pleasant scenic place, where restaurants had more time to provide a better service, the sights daytime much more attractive and quiet. So the best advice, avoid weekends, public holidays and the busy season.

The historic center is beautiful and it is worth visiting all the churches and historic houses, such as the Abacaxi and D.João, among others. It has the cultural center of Sebrae, with exhibitions. A lot of commerce and good restaurants. I went with my wife who is PCD and the historic center is not prepared to receive them. Very difficult the use of wheelchair in function of the floor, I believe that for older people, without the help of a relative, also be very difficult. The city also offers good escuna and jeep tours. We did a charrete tour, 30minutos, and the charreteers know a little more about the history of the city, but els are limited to a few streets.

Paraty is a beautiful city!!
What ruins the city are the traders and entrepreneurs who think that all visitors earn in euros or dollars.
Unreal prices!!
Ice cream, pasta and pizza more expensive than in Italy.
Absurd!
There are different amounts for cash, debit and credit payments. The latter with different rates between 2% and 8% more on the bill. Boat trips and fees at the end to be paid have not been explained before. An abuse!
In other words, visit other places until the locals know how to better serve tourists, seeing them not just as "bags of gold", but as humans.
I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it.

The town of Paraty takes its name from the language of the Tupi tribe. In the local dialect, this word means "river of fish". Founded on the green coast in 1597 as a fishing settlement, it only became a full-fledged city in 1667.

The city of Paraty experienced years of prosperity only after 1696, i.e. after the discovery of gold and the launch of the over 1,200-kilometer long so-called the "golden route", from the mines - located inland - to the stone piers and quays of the city, where further, by sea, the treasures plundered from the indigenous inhabitants were transported to Portugal. Interestingly, it lost its position to Rio de Janeiro due to the fact that the port in Rio had a greater ability to defend sea transport against pirates roaming these waters.

The present... is a fashionable seaside resort with a population of 50,000, attracting countless fans of beautiful views and artistic experiences. The perfectly preserved old town with its original urban layout, preserved infrastructure and roofs decorated with characteristic tiles deserves special mention. In recognition of its values, Paraty was included on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2094.

I see deep architectural analogies here to Cusco, Peru.
IT'S WORTH IT!

I think I fell in love...
That's what I said when leaving Bella, Muy Bella, Paratí, really the charm of its cobblestone streets (although some women complain because they didn't wear appropriate footwear) is indisputable. The preservation of its fronts and balconies, the corners without octaves (unthinkable for the time)
Although it may seem strange, the first thing I wanted to do when I arrived in Paratí was to look for an old church (what an originality of mine) that appeared in an advertisement from the 80s in which a group of young girls and boys were dancing and at one point it appears in the background of the image a typical Portuguese-type church from the mid-16th century (or 17th century) when we began the tour I forgot about my primary objective and dedicated myself to "savoring" each of the landscapes that this beautiful city offered me.
Ahhh, I didn't tell you. ! I found the church I was looking for, but I can't remember the name... never mind, now I have an excuse to come back.

The city and historic center are horrible. Unremarkable shops, dirty bars, poorly prepared food, horrible cobbled streets, difficult to walk around and a city full of maloqueiros and hippies. Hotels, even the best ones, are horrible. The service in almost all places is terrible, people are unfriendly and rude in almost all establishments. The city is very ugly and the historic center has absolutely nothing special, just decadent bars. The energy in the place is horrible, it felt like I was in a nightmare.

The historic center is cute, with several old mansions, many craft shops, restaurants... It is quite charming.

The tide rises and fills the streets with water and it causes bad smell and becomes quite difficult to walk.
As beautiful as it is the streets filled with stones do not have any accessibility, need to think and improve these issues.
The values are above average so be prepared... a simple refrigerator magnet costs R$ 20,00.
Parking is a big problem due to the lack of local structure to stop the car and super complicated and crowded.
I believe whoever is worth a day trip, to stroll through the historic center and eat something, nothing more.

Paraty has a lot of history and is enchanting to see the town so well preserved. The streets are a hazard when there is water, and I recommend wearing good shoes and not flip-flops to walk around. The doors of the casarões are beautiful photography spots!

The historic centre is very clean and well preserved.
However, the paving stones in the street are terrible uneven. Dangerous and difficult to walk.

Lots of restaurants and bars but the town counsel has prohibited sunshades.......who can sit in 35 deg C and sun to eat or have something to drink? It is simply impossible.
When the sun sets, the place fills up.
