    Parrot beak Ilha grande
Unique experience, the night ascent has a magic that can only be understood and felt by experiencing it. It's very exciting. We were lucky enough to meet Martin, the parrot man, as my partner and I nicknamed him hehe. A very experienced luxury guide, the one who knows the most about this circuit, with great ability to handle the equipment, made the tour very bearable, even though at times it seemed complex, he knew how to find the right moments to take breaks. and continue with energy. Although the view is unique up there, the path is what teaches you the most and comforts you the most... Martin is Argentine, that's why we chose him, and he guided us in 2 languages the entire time since our group was made up of two different nationalities. Highly recommended to do this night activity on Ilha Grande. Yes or yes with a guide, not only because of the risk of getting lost but because of the assistance they give you when knowing the place, every stone, branch, climb or descent. Martin can be contacted by wsp or insta as sunrisepioneers.

    Went without guide, impressive
This is a demanding hike. Since I'm not a sunrise guy, I did it on my own (no guide) starting at a time when there was sufficient light to do this safely. There are a few dangers to keep in mind: taking a bad step that could make you twist an ankle. There are venomous snakes in Ilha Grande and this trail, in particular, feels wild. Dehydration may be an issue depending on the season. I finally started around 6:15am and got to the summit around 8:45pm. I'm probably an above-average hiker, so adjust accordingly. In any case, please activate your GPS and bring an application with a map. Strava worked fine for me. There were a couple of somewhat confusing situations, close to the top, in which Strava really helped. The hike is through the forest 100% of the time, with no views. It's beautiful though. I did not meet anyone in my way up, because most people who do this walk time it to be at the top for the sunrise. At my time of arrival (8:45am) the last group of people from the sunrise shift were departing, so I was on my own at the summit. Incredible views. Honestly, I thought that the sunrise crowd misses this better hour of the day, when the whole horizon is illuminated revealing an endless chain of mountains and bays. Curiously, I met people that were still going up during my descend, which means that they walked at a time when it was considerable hotter. Even though I was there in early August (winter), the temperature was pretty much on the high side. August offers clear, impressive views. It took me about 2:15 to come back. Keep in mind that the trail is in the west side of Abraao, so if your place is in the East side, it's going to take about 40 minutes or more for you to get to the point where the trail really begins.

Hot, steamy and demanding but great.
I did the climb in December 2025 without a guide. As a trail runner who lives in the Alps I was not afraid of it being technical or losing the path (I had the Strava track too). I left at 9:00 a.m. and covered the first kilometer up to the turning into the forest relatively quickly. This covers about the first 150 M of the 1,000 M of altitude. That's the signpost turning right into the jungle track, it gets steep pretty quickly and the next 800 altitude metres and 4 km are relatively demanding with lots of stepping over rocks across tree roots, and on some relatively slippery areas. All attempts to run this section were quickly abandoned, as the heat was a limiting factor for someone who had relatively recently arrived from a European winter. Route finding for the last 150 m is a little challenging and I needed to look at the Strava track once or twice. It took me around 2 hours from the town to the top. I think the advertised three and a half hours is pretty slow going and most people would do it somewhere between 2 hours 45 minutes and 3 hours. The view from the top makes it all worthwhile and the descent was more straightforward then I expected, given the ascent. I did see one snake on the way back down near the exit back onto the road. It scared the life out of me and moved incredibly fast off into the forest.

You need to start early to reach the peak for sunrise, 2am in our case, but it is very worth it. The sunrise was spectacular and our awesome guide Martin knew all the good spots for great photos.
The hike at night is demanding physically but does not present any technical difficulties. Martin managed our group very well, keeping us updated on our progress, making sure we had regular water breaks, and stopping to share info on the jungle's nature.
If you want avoid bigger groups and crowds at the top to enjoy this experience the best you can, contact Martin!

PS: Martin mentioned it but take some warm clothes to wait for the sunrise at the summit, it's windy and chilly before the sun shows up.

This was a great tour. We opted to do the sunrise tour. We started out at 2/2.30 am and made it to the top by 5am. Our tour guide, Franco, was very fun and full of energy whilst motivating everyone at the same time. He managed to communicate to all the group in different languages and everyone left happy. The trek is hard but a great experience and deffinetly worth it! Thanks to Franco and all the other people on our tour! James

We had an aamzing time climbing Parrot's Peak and would hughly recommend it. It is more challenging than the other trails on Ilha Grande but with a great guide setting the pace we had such an enjoyable experience! Martin was our guide and you can contact him via WhatsApp +55 24 999 952 999 or Instagram @sunsetpioneers. Bring lots of water and some treats for the top!

We were reaching to a point of view of Ilha Grande, and heard that it was possible to go to its highest summit by night to reach it at the sunrise.

We find our guide in a local agency from the morning to the evening.

Our experience can be summed-up in a good physical challenge, rewarded with a great view at the arrival and great feeling all along the way.
Our crew thank a lot our guide who make those some hours unique, thank to his good mood, his attention and his explanations of the natural/geographical area.

Wow! Best experience on Ilha Grande by far! We met Franco the day before the hike to make sure everything was organised correctly. Franco was super friendly, supportive and energetic! I have used guides all over the world and he was by far the best. The trek was very fun and Franco spotted a lot of wildlife including spiders and fire flies which was amazing! He took amazing photos of the whole group and made sure to walk slower if someone was tired. It was the best experience in Brazil and I would recommend anyone to watch the sunrise with Franco, he is a great guide and extremely professional and helpful! Thanks again.

I have done various hiking trails across the state of Rio but this one definitely falls in my top 3. The night hike is fairly intense and probably takes around 3.5 hours to reach the summit. Apart from the distance the main reason for it taking so long is that you are in the middle of the forest and therefore deadly snakes and spiders are in abundance. Our guide (George) leads whilst continuously making sure that the path ahead is clear and safe for us to follow through hence why this is not a hike rushed. He also stops at various points for water breaks making sure everyone is ok.

When you reach the top the views are mind blowing, we arrived an hour before sunrise in order to have a bite to eat and rest at the top.

Our guide George has done this trip over 300 times and I couldn't recommend a better person to go with. His knowledge of the forest was truly impressive. Don't leave the island without having done this hike, you will live to regret it.

Martin was a an absolute joy to work with. He is professional and knowledgeable while still making the experience fun and enjoyable. We completed both the parrot peak hike and also the sunset canoe trip. Martins tours are an amazing experience and I highly recommend him if you enjoy staying active while on the island. During our time we were able to experience a variety of unforgettable moments including watching one of the most spectacular sunrises I’ve ever seen and swimming with bioluminescence. Martin keeps the mood light and also provided us with amazing photos of the entire adventure for no additional cost. 10/10 recommend!

Amazing experience with our guide Martín. We were 5. The hike started at 2 am and were at the top at 4:40 am to see the sunrise.

Martín made the hike far more interesting (meditation in the night, shortcuts, hidden spot to see the sunrise, animals …). He did more 700 times so he is very knowledgeable about the trail.

Our experience with Martín couldn’t have been better. He has summited papagaio +650 times over 15 years so he knows exacly how to get there on time, the fauna and how to take the best photos. I would highly recommend him. I reached out to him via his phone number +55-(24)-999952999 as well as Instagram @sunrisepioneers. He speaks fluent Spanish (is Argentinian), Portuguese and English.

Martin is a great tour guide and an even better person. His relentless enthusiasm for the outdoors is infectious, and ensures everyone around him will have a great experience. We went for a sunrise hike with Martin and enjoyed it so much, that we went for a sunset canoe tour a few days later. Both were incredible experiences, offering unique perspectives of the beautiful Ilha Grande. Would highly recommend either of these tours to anyone visiting in the future.
