At the suggestion of the taxi dispatcher we decide to give Armacao Beach a try instead of Ilhabela’s most celebrated beach, Curral Beach. Armacao Beach was a 15-20 minute taxi ride along the scenic coast road and cost $50USD round-trip for 4-people. We had to pay for the round trip up front so we were concerned if the taxi would come back for our return to town but to our relief he arrived 5-minutes prior to our agreed pick-up time so the transportation worked perfectly. The beach seemed to have more locals than foreign tourists and is clean and relatively flat with a gradual decline to the ocean. Since the sun is strong here we wanted shade you have a couple of options; you can rent chairs/umbrellas from one beach vendor for the portion of the day you desire or you can have complementary use of a table, chairs and chase lounges from a nice beach bar & restaurant, Ilhabela Salga as long as you buy food and drinks from them. The added benefit is they have three huge trees between the bar and ocean that have a canopy of shade 30-feet by 200-feet which is where we chose to be for the day. We were 1st on the beach at 9AM and virtually opened the bar and had our choice of spots to sit. We were lucky to find a young waiter who spoke English and was not only helpful but a delightful young man who we relied on to interpret and explain what we wanted. The beverage and food prices are high but given the location and use of their chairs and tables for the day we felt was well worth it. A 600ml beer is $12re(about $5USD) and 2-fish tacos were $38re(about $15USD). Adjacent to the bar they have a deck and bandstand. During the morning they played appropriate recorded music and in the afternoon they had live entertainment. When departing Ilabela our ship sailed past Curral Beach which we could see was row-upon-row of beach chairs and umbrellas which confirmed to us that our somewhat obscure Armacao Beach turned out to be a far better place to spend the day.

It's not really a beach, but a bay, you can stroll along the boardwalk and shop (including local handicraft), book a sea excursion for you at the pier or have a good meal at the many restaurants around (go for the fresh seafood, of course).
This place was the one that gave the city its name (Armação dos Buzios), and its also famous because actress Brigitte Bardot has lived there for a short period in the 60's. Another local attraction is the 'Estátua dos Pescadores' (Fishermen's Statue)', because the city was born as a fishermen village. And dont forget to stay to see the beautiful sunset.

I wish i had had enough time to visit all the beaches that Buzios had to offer, but i absolutely enjoyed walking in rua das pedras, along the orla, from the pier all the way to Azeda beach. At night time the centre gets packed and buzzing, and i saw families with children, young and old, there will be a restaurant to suit your taste. It´s a place you wish you had a summer house and could escape to every weekend, for me at least!

For a place that is so well touted, it's expensive to get to if you can figure out how to.. from Rio airport (there is a Public Shuttle service called 1001 they have a website it's about $30.00 us ($60,00 R) one way from GIG to downtown Buzios and returns as well to GIG airport, you must pay attention AND say where you are going at the airport and you must know which Terminal you need to be dropped at, also do not loose your receipt or luggage and make sure that your luggage is addressed to where you are staying in Buzios/Brazil or if you are flying home to your home address, make sure you have a good understanding of Portuguese) PLEASE NOTE if you fly(Terminal 1) DELTA to this country they only have a part time terminal, you will not be able to locate it unless it is serving a flight, you will see signs that point to DELTA and you can spend hours walking back and forth to NO avail...and NO ONE will or can tell you where it might be. You can not use American dollars in the country... here your best bet here is to use the ATM inside the Banco Brazil Branches .. which is located in the Buzios Centro Area (also alert your bank that you will be traveling to Brazil, they have a HIGH crime rate with ATM, credit card theft identity and again NO ENGLISH is spoken) you will get the best exchange rate with the ATM ( plus $2.00 fee to use) and they have cameras and armed guards during the day. DO NOT use the ATM'S outside and around the city, ever. The movie theater was a high lite and some movies are in English or with sub titles, NO popcorn and even if you bring your own from a street vendor it's frowned upon...it's like any beach area, shop after shop of cheap trinkets from Buzios, over priced food and you have to buy every drop of water that you drink, eat food you may not think that your getting, it's always a surprise.. .another country which relies on it's status of poverty, smiles and their lack of understanding of your language to coerce you into buying, spending more than you have or want to. Pictures are the best bet for seeing this city unless you are a real trouper and learn their language, not for the weak, or an all needy tourist, cause it's just not going to happen here, no matter what you have to spend, I'd say skip this destination until they catch up with the tourist world all the way~

Loved watching the little fishing boats bringing in their catch. View points and seats all along the promenade. Backed by restaurants and lovely shops. Quiet and relaxed in October.

Similar to an up-market Mediterranean resort, Buzios has sun , sea and sand-with some of the most beautiful beaches imaginable, shopping, and a large variety of excellent restaurants, shops (many fashion boutiques) and cafes. We visited out-of -season -August, and it was warm. Not sure if place would be as nice or enjoyable in season ,with teeming crowds and very very hot humid weather. We stayed in Vila d'Este (separately reviewed) -wonderful.

The only negative here (and hence not 5*) -is that fraudsters are at work. I used an HSBC card machine in an ATM kiosk to withdraw cash- noone else there , machine looked OK-I returned home to Ireland to find my card being skimmed from ATMs in Sao Paolo. I will be refunded, but this is annoying as my card has to be replaced and security should be improved in these places if they want repeat business from tourists-my bank told me that card fraud such as this is rife in Brazil , affecting countless people every day.

It's good just to walk on the side walk. The water is clean but it is very rocky, unsafe for swimming.

This is the most tourist-oriented part of the city. Nice for a walk, but avoid restaurants and spending too much time there.
