We staying in Ouro Preto and had a day trip to Marianna. Its a beautiful town but compared to Ouro Preto was a bit disappointing. I think if we'ed have looked at Marianna first then we would have enjoyed it more. Lovely square and on the day we visited there was a motor cycle rally so lots of bikers and great music in the square.

Mariana is the oldest town in the State of Minas Gerais. It used to be the state's capital founded in 1696, but Belo Horizonte took over this status. Mariana retains baroque characteristics in its churches, buildings and museums. Much more 'chilled' than its sister town, Ouro Preto. Great to stroll around. Note the historical old stone whipping post in the area between these 2 churches, to which slaves and miscreants were tied and beaten! Uggh!

This is by far the nicest lookout the city has to offer but there is an army of tour guides and sellers trying to make their living. I do believe that the may not have many job opportunities but some tourists just want to enjoy the scenery by themselves without being bothered.

This square transports you back to a former age. It is flanked by churches, one of which is not open and appears to need renovation, and a museum. However, the square is atmospheric and looks over the newer part of the town. Cobbled streets lead off the square and it is very attractive and less visited than other towns. It is a gem. The only negative aspect of visiting this area was constant harassment from guides (who spoke no English so of no value to us), postcard sellers and car parking "attendants" who look after your car and obviously expect money. The area seemed safe to us and at no other time in Minas Gerais did we experience this. A cold coke and beer at the cafe overlooking the square was a good "pit stop" because it had a verandah and you can watch the world go by! If this town is not on your itinerary, change your itinerary!
