The church is now open after extensive restoration. Unclear from Lonely Planet Brazil 2022 book if it would be open (closed at time of their research), so it must be very recent opening. Beautiful church and art and adornments gleam.

Best for the urban environment! Not only this building to visit but the others around are worth a visit too.

You can take photos without a flash and from the outside it doesn't look so beautiful but it really is worth visiting, and it's just beside the church of Saint Francisco

This is the main cathedral in Mariana and a seat of local Archbishop. It has an organ and some restricted area for local catholic conclave. The decor is actually very nice. There are a couple of local guides that will tell you everything about the place for 10-15Rs but none of them speaks English. If you don't want to pay them, you have to ask them to stop because they will keep talking otherwise and will demand money. But actually, at least one of them was a very well educated guide and told a lot of interesting things about the church, bishop, latest town gossip, and other very peculiar pieces of information. Good thing I had a friend with me who was able to translate part of it.

There are supposed to be some organ concerts on Saturday or Sunday but we visited the place on Friday. It also seems to have a nice "soft" acoustic touch as sounds there are not just amplified but somewhat softened as well.

This church is not huge but it has some gold and ornate structures. There is also the organ and this is a rare organ in Brazil. There are only 2 in the country. I was not there for the concert. There is a fee to get in and guides hang around the entrance. Be aware that they will charge for any information that they divulge.

Like the vast majority of churches in Minas Gerais, you have to pay to enter. This is absurd. When I went they charged 5 reais. Catholics no longer even have the right to see what they praise for free, and tourists cannot see national art for free either. The facade is beautiful, but paying to enter a church is only in Minas Gerais

Recently restored according to a lady who charges 8 reais entry. THERE IS NO SAINT. All of them are still undergoing restoration according to her, which makes it a visit for fanatics not for those who want to see history.

The church is now open for visitors and is simply wonderful. You pay 5 reais to enter but it's worth it
