With three concert hall, for 1400, 400 and 60 people. It is the main place for theatre, orchestras and shows. It needs a renovation.

One of the main attractions of Brasilia, a planned city, is the architecture of the government buildings many designed by Oscar Niemeyer. My wife describes some of them as straight out of the old Jetson's cartoon. The National Theatre, or more correctly, the Cláudio Santoro National Theater (Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro) is not one in this style, rather representing a truncated pyramid with blocks of different sizes jutting out so is looks a bit like an armadillo and certainly begging to be climbed! Anyway, we walked around the interior and was able to go down into one of the theaters where a ballet group was practicing. The lobby is nicely lit and worth a quick stop in.

Besides scheduled theater, shows or orchestra, on Tuesday's nights you can watch to wonderful concerts performed by the National Theater's Symphonic Orchestra for free.

I was very disturbed when I had read that the National Theater was sitting abandoned and in disrepair. I was thrilled, however, to find out on my recent visit to Brasilia that the lobby is once again open to the public (though the performance space remains closed and unused at this time). Within the lobby you can appreciate this stunningly beautiful work of Niemeyer and Burle Marx, with its slanted glass roof, entry ramps, floating (of course) staircase, and gorgeous landscaping. Worth stopping in for a look. The exterior needs a tiny bit of graffiti-removal, but you can immediately see why they have to patrol the exterior to keep people from "rock climbing" up its face (as it's inherently tempting by design).

This modern multifunctional National Theatre is designed by Oscar Niemeyer. It is beautiful but unfortunately very bad maintained.
