Historic patrimony and government house of Espírito Santo, the Anchieta Palace is a jesuit building, wich was erected between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Originaly, the building functined as a church, named Santiago's Church, and as a school, serving to the religious interests until their expulsion in 1759. Passed many modifocation proccesses in the following centuries, the building still as a house of the government, functioning as a cultural place too, where are recepted several itinerant exhibitions, visits in its permanent collection and, specially at saturdays and sundays, visits in the governor's cabinet, passing through old residential wing.

Spectacular guided tour of the government headquarters facilities, where we can learn about the building's origins as a church and Jesuit school, its subsequent transformation into a hospital... prison... barracks... until it became the government headquarters, and even until recently It was also the residence of the governors. Many interesting facts told by the excellent guide, who is a young historian, from Botafogo, and I gave him a well-deserved congratulations at the end. To end this authentic history lesson, a 10-minute documentary film is shown. All free and without the need for an appointment.

A beautiful 16th century building, it was initially the headquarters of Colégio São Tiago and in the last century it became the headquarters of the state government. José de Anchieta was buried there, but later his remains were removed to Bahia. Free and monitored daily visits. I recommend visiting on the weekends, as there is full access from there.

The main historical building of the city of Vitoria. Today, it is the seat of government, but it was the first Jesuit church in the State of Espírito Santo.Place of pilgrimage of the devotees of priest Jose Anchieta, since he was buried in this building in the century XVI .
It's worth visiting!! To learn more about the history of the city, do the guided tour. (It is free... but I don´t know, if it has in english).

When you see this building you must wonder what other beautiful buildings in Vitoria have been destroyed in the name of modernisation. This is a gem amongst the traffic and fumes of the city. I have only ever seen it from the outside but this year I managed to view inside. There isnt that much left of the orginal interior and that which has been preserved is not for viewing. Of interest is the original foundations and walls of part of the building Several buildings surrounding the area have been renovated but the remaining ugly buildings and graffiti are constant reminders of the battle between beauty and the lack of appreciation for it.

I have been many times over the years in Vitoria because my mother is from there. I never really had an interest to explore and get to know better the city since I was very young, but last december i made my mission to do so. Going to the Palacio Anchieta I had no idea what to find and no expectations what so ever. I must say I was really surprised:
1 by the palace itself where you can find many interesting reperts, and it shows pretty well that Brasil is not at all only bikinis and beaches.
2 I found inside the palace a FREE exhibition of Modigliani paintings and life, I adore his works and in finding in such a random place this exhibition which was well presented, organized and had many informations about the author, his life his works, and also had paintings, I was delighted!
3 Not even in Venice where I live, or for the matter London or any other artistic city in Italy can one find such a gentle welcoming followed by a free guided tour with super gentle and informed people whom at the end even gave you free maps and written information about other interesting points of the city.
In the end I was really happy with this experience and I heartly hope that this will improve, that it will get much more known inside the country and outside. There were many tourists from inside Brasil and many students visiting it so how hope that they will moltiplicate themselves!

We took the guided tour, which was great. We have learned a lot about the history of Vitória and of Espírito Santo. It is free of charge and really worth it.
It takes from 30min to 1h.

A terrific visit, guided by Wesley in good English. He was knowledgeable, interesting and the palace is a fine place to learn about Espírito Santo and Vitória. It was a real bonus to have an English speaking guide who was so fluent, and so helpful.

This is a central attraction in Vitoria and is steeped in history. They only have the living areas open in weekends so we were only able to visit some of the building and the art gallery. Staff there were very attentive and keen to provide information and understanding of the history of this palace.
