We happened upon this accidentally because a Brazilian eco professor took us there for a fair. We were warmly greeted by the professor who initiated this restoration project 25 years ago. It is remarkable, especially at this time when our planet is in such danger from climate change and, Brazil in particular. Over 1 million visitors have come or studied here and 9 hectares have been saved from being cemented over since it is close to the Salvador airport and many condos/hotels. It was amazing to see photos of the many species of flora and fauna that have been saved on this property, many of which are endemic (only exist here)! There is even a small lagoon where, during the night and only accessible to professors of this biosphere, there are small (bigger than I would ever want to encounter) anacondas! Hats off to anyone who would engage in such a monumental effort over a quarter of a decade!!!

Dunes dunes and more dunes
If you are lodged in the city center of Salvador it is worth a day trip to Itapua, Stela Maris and/or Flamengo beach and a visit to the Parque das Dunas (Dunes Park) in Praia de Flamengo neighborhood near the airport.

When we arrived we heard you need a guide to walk the trails. Be sure to call the number and ask for the available time slots.. or just secretly sneak in ;) The cost for a guided tour is 20 reais and officially you're not allowed in without a guide.

The white sand dunes are beautiful and we really enjoyed the walk. The park offers a variety of vegetation and the little education centre at the entrance is a nice place to start. It's a great place to unwind and go for a relaxing half day trip
