Really interesting open air sculpture with amazing sew views. It's right close to Elevador Lacerda, Palacio Rio Branco and Misericordia Museum.

I'm rather surprised that there are no English-language reviews of the Monumento da Cruz Caida. Perhaps foreign tourists don’t pay much attention to it because the Cruz Caida is NOT—repeat NOT—part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Irony of ironies; it’s enough to make angels weep! Here’s the deal: when Dom Pedro Fernandes Sardinha, the first bishop of Brazil (see Sarhinha photo) arrived in 1552, the first church that functioned as his cathedral was a thatched-roof Jesuit chapel. A new, proper church was immediately started, just outside the city walls. Due to Indian attacks and the threat of incursions from the Dutch and Spaniards , the city wall was soon extended to enclose it. Note that this cathedral was built more than a half a century before the French settled Canada or the English settled Virginia: a long time back. That first cathedral building was superseded by a second one built on exactly the same spot in the early 1600s—about the time Champlain finally got around to founding Quebec and John Smith got around to founding Virginia—still 400 years ago. A century or so after that, a new cathedral reflecting the wealth of the city was built, but not here. It’s up the street, on Largo Terreiro de Jesus. That new church took over the archiepiscopal functions of the old one--the Antiga Se--but the old church was still here, still a church, and a dearly revered one. In 1933, the municipality had it demolished in order clear a right-of-way for a tramway. Hence the Cruz Caida, the Fallen Cross memorial to the loss of the Antiga Se (see Fallen Cross photo). If you go to it, one thing you won’t see, other than the ancient church of course, is any tram tracks. The reason is that after leveling one of the most historic churches in the western hemisphere, the politicians decided trams weren’t that great an idea after all, and busses would be fine instead. Imagine if Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Rio de Janeiro was demolished next week for a subway station on grounds that the city had a new cathedral now anyway—and then the city decided not to have a station there after all! 1552 to 1933; that old cathedral survived from before Elizabeth Tudor became queen of England until after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, and then they wrecking-balled it! Thank you, United Nations, for helping to protect what’s left of historic Salvador; if only the League of Nations had started a program like yours back in the 1920s…. ps: Sardinha is quite a wild story himself; I tell it in my review of Praca de Se.

This cross is unique and worth taking time to reflect that where the cross is was once the site of a cathedral.

The Cross and its reference to the Christianity and more importantly the history of the Church is Salvador makes this piece of art a memorable stop and photo op during a walking tour near the elevator.

This monument marks the place of the old cathedral which stood right there from its erection in 1552 until it was demolished in 1933, for better urbanization. It is a fallen cross in the exact place where the original cross stayed.

This cross is very close to the Elevador Lacerda and has great views of the harbour. It apparently marks the location of an old cathedral demolished in 1933.

On the Praça da Sé, the Cathedral Square in the Cidade Alta, the historic center of Salvador, stands a monument called 'Cruz Caida'. It depicts a fallen cross at the spot, where once the old cathedral stood, demolished in 1933 during a reurbanisation plan. It is a work by local artist Mario Cravo, who also made the very different looking 'Fonte de Rampa do Mercado' near the Mercado Modelo.
Close by are the Memorial das Baianas, the Elevador down to the Mercado Modelo and there are also great views from here to the whole Baixa quarter, known as Comercio.
