The market was fun to walk through, however prices were not cheap. 3 levels at some point. There is a restaurant at the back with nice views. Wouldn't really recommend if you really aren't looking to shop. Not really historical at all. Prices aren't cheap,...More

Cool place to buy local things. Huge amount of everything which is connected with Salvador/Bahia. Very big variety of pimenta (spicy pepper sauce), candies and local alcohol.

We were very disappointed that the lowest level had been closed several years earlier, and not reopened to the public. While the opportunity to interact with vendors is excellent, there is a rich cultural history that feels like it has been "painted over". Please invest...More

This market is very beautiful both from the outside, and especially from the inside. An immense variety of colors that identify the local craftsmanship, and the typical delicacies of Salvador. Although it is not the case, there are also restaurants where you can enjoy the...More

You won’t find anything authentic here. Instead you’ll get hassled and potentially pick pocketed. Don’t bother going.

Hello! You can take a bus at the airport and go to “ praça da sé “ there, you get the Elevador Lacerda and when you arrive down you are in front of it. Good luck!

travelling form Salvador to Morro Sao Paolo (3 Replies)
Hello there, I am travelling by bus form Belo Horizonte back to Salvador. I think I arriv etoo late to get to Morro on the same day. Does anyone know where would be good to stay just for the night, quite cheap and near the bus and the Catermeran port (Mercado Modelo)? Also has anyone got the Catermeran form Salvador to Morro - and can say about the times, did you need tickets, and how much? Thanks.

There's one at 9AM and another at 2PM. So if you arriving after lunch you will need to stay overnight in Salvador. I've taken the catamaran, depending on the weather and sea state it can be quite a rough crossing, so if you are prone to sea sickness it could be a tough couple of hours. You can purchase tickets at the terminal maritimo, which is about 100 metres directly behind the Mercado Modelo. If you are travelling on a weekend, public holiday or a peak period you would be well advisd...More

Help with itinerary please? (2 Replies)
Hi all, My husband and I are coming to Salvador in a couple of weeks for 4 nights. We land at around 10.30 am on thur 8th may and depart at 5am ish for Manaus on Monday 12th may. We have currently booked the pousada colonial (which I think is a 10 min walk from the pelourinho?) and I was hoping for some help with structuring our itinerary as I'm finding it a little difficult to figure out how long we'll need at certain places etc. Some of the things we would like to see are : Sao...More

Do not worry about the Colonial, they have refurbished the entire building only a year ago. The location is calm and at some 10minutes stepping from the center of Pelourinho. Praia do Forte is an idea but combine it with some beaches driving up there, there are some really wonderfull and calm ones, certainly don't try to go during weekends. You could also consider a visit to Cachoeira, in the Recôncavo area around the Paraguaçu-river, you would discover there an interesting landscape and...More

Salvador Trip Report - February 2009 (5 Replies)
So this is part II of my trip report, which will focus on other things aside from Carnaval. As I mentioned before, we stayed at Studio Do Carmo (excellent). When we were not dancing in Carnaval, we went to the beaches (full day activity!). We didn't really do much other sight-seeing (sad, yes, i know, but we only had limited time...). We went on the Ladeira, and did not see any safety issues as we had previously been warned about, but we were also going during the day. We shopped...More
