not manicured houses here, not loud music on sunday morning...this ancient part of the city is more fascinating than the famous one.....the church is beautiful like others, but the mass of sunday morning has nuns and friars singing together softly in a very nice ‘old style’ way.....

Interesting but do not miss going down the stairway to the basement to see the lodging of the slaves. Shivers down your spine!

I enjoyed my visit to this church. There are several interesting and beautiful historic details within the building. It seems the structure is in need of some restoration. Perhaps the most impressive item on display is the sculpture of the Dead Christ.
A person who identified himself as a member of the Church of Mount Carmel offered to show us around which we appreciated. Although he did not mention a fee at any time previous to the tour, at the end of it he established a fixed amount per person to be paid with an explanation that it was "a donation" to fund the church's charities. I believe he should have said that right from the start...

Very worth visiting this small church. The wood carven sculptures are quite an expression of the brazilian late Barroco. At the basement you can see the place where the slaves used to lodge.
Very good guide who charges you at the end.

The church has a volunteer local guide who is very well versed on its history, architecture, sculptures and paintings. There is also the Christ sculpture covered with tiny ruby stones.

This church is not well preserved as the other churches of Salvador, but I would recommend the visit. It has a nice altar. You pay about US$ 2.00 to enter.

Carmo Church is located in Carmo neighborhood which is sandwiched in between Pelorinho and Santo Antonio neighborhoods. Therefore you can start in Pelorinho and walk tour your way up to Carmo and the Church and Beyond.

The Pestana hotel next door is what used to be Carmo Convent. Beautiful Patio area and good restaurant

A bit off the beaten path, but well worth a visit. We went fairly early in the day and a helpful young man took us around to see every nook and cranny including the escape tunnel in the basement that connects all the many churches in the city. He explained all the carvings and panels, showed us private rooms, and, of course, the carving of Christ (after the crucifixion) with 2,000 rubies representing drops of blood embedded in the carving. Very moving!

This beautiful Carmelite convent is well worth a visit, not so much for the rococo church interior as for the adjoining chapels and convent buildings. It's not open all the time and it's tricky to find out opening hours in advance.

this has a church, a dining room, a downstairs dungeon, the lot, the air and space is breathtaking and good old body of Christ in a coffin, always scaring the kiddies....loved it.
