I visited this market as part of a shore excursion from Salvador. This market had many different food stuffs as well as other items such as clothing and crafts. This is probably the worst market I have seen in the world. It was grubby and...More

This can be just another market, as another reviewer noted, but what "got me" is that this is the place most Candomble practitioners go to get their offering animals, candles, and even costumes. This place is unique in that it merges a farmers' market with...More

As with many South American markets interesting but rather grubby and chaotic. Prices low and large range of fruit vegetables and spices. Outside the market I was mugged and had my property stollen and my wrist bruised in a struggle. We were on a cruise...More

That is raw Bahia as you can only see in Pierre Verger's pictures or in Jorge Amado's books. This is where baianos go for shopping. It's very cheap but don't expect to find a clean market. This one is dirty. And still beautiful. You can...More

As mentioned by local tour operator this seems to be the biggest market in Latin-America and indeed when you walk the interior you can easily get lost. This is where local restaurants go and buy their needs- spices, vegetables, fruit, fish, life stock, clothes any...More

If you're like me, and you seek out markets wherever you go, I'm sure you'll like it. It definitely is an assault on the senses in ever way. An endless network with something surprising around every corner. Stay alert though, people are pushing carts and...More

In addition to the usual fruits, vegetables, meat and fish....this market offered relics and animals for Candomble religious beliefs and ceremonies. Very interesting.

This is not really a fair review because we we only drove slowly by a couple of times in a taxi, and temporarily stopped a couple of times, once while the taxi driver ask the policeman where he could park (which there was no where...More

Great place to take pictures, recommended by my b&b owners. They sell mostly fruit, vegs and meat here. The colours are amazing but the smells can be intrusive and if you are a strict vegetarian you may wish to avoid this
