Zumbi dos Palmares was a Brazilian of Kongo/Angola origin with Islamic background who was one of the pioneers of resistance to slavery of Africans by the Portuguese in Brazil. This statue really jumps out at you as you walk from the elevator to the main square of the old city.

Zumbi was born in Angola and when in Brazil was a leader in the fight against slavery and is remembered by this quite interesting bronze statue.
