The market buildings were constructed in England in the 1890's and shipped to Manaus.

More than 100 years later the markets continue in the old buildings and at the west end contain the meat market but most interesting is the east side where the fish market is located.

Make your visit before noon wher the huge variety of u usual fresh water fish are for sale, especially the two metre long Pirarucu fish and fillets are offered. Look also for the Peacock Bass and the different catfish. The visit is a real education.

I was visiting the market with a Brazilian friend. This is like a book of all the fish in the river, well actually not all as there are more than 5000 different fishes. It ws mazing. It is a must and go with a local who can tell you about the fish for sale and how they can be prepared.

We arrived a little later in the day to see the market. It is best to go early in the day when all the vendors have their fresh fruits, vegetables and seafoods to sell. As the day progresses, the vendors with baskets and crafts are the ones remaining in the market trying to earn their living.

We still found this to be an interesting experience, but it is not worth more than a half an hour or so later in the day. Earlier would warrant more time.

Please use caution as there are pickpockets about. They are very quick and are looking for anything expensive like cameras, jewelry and cell phones that they can grab quickly. We were warned not to wear or show anything of value, and our guides told us not to go near the market at night.

This is known as the "fish market". You can take nice pictures of all the colors available there. You will see how they prepare fish. The smaller ones are cut in a process called "ticar", where they make thin slices along the fishes bodies to chop their bones so they can be eaten after they are fried. You will see a lot of dried pirarucu fish meat and tambaqui fish. They have a nice selection of manioc flour kinds and they sell peppers. There are plenty of tucupi bottles and the smaller ones have some pepper inside forming a sauce popular in local restaurants. Make sure to buy at least a pack of uarini flour.

Whether you are after local food or memorabilia to take home, this experience gives you a good idea of how the nearly 2 million Manaus inhabitants survive and move along the Amazon. Located right on the harbour front, it is ideally located for cruise ship visitors.
The market includes many stalls featuring human masks which appears to be a big attraction after the wide variety of locally made beaded necklets and bracelets.
As Manaus is about 1000 miles up river from the Atlantic, most freight and journeys are by river or air. So, people watching at the harbour is fascinating as they come and go, often fully laden with unbelievable sizes and quantities of luggage, complete with their own hammock for sleeping on board the local ferries. An entire deck is given over to hammock hanging for the 2/3 day journeys with the meals included in the price.
Tip - an early morning walk-about is best to mitigate the oppressive 95% humidity.- US dollars accepted with pleasure - but DO bargain!

A five minute walk from the cruise and local bus terminal, and immediately alongside the famed Adolfo Lisboa Market this was just what I needed after a few days on board Fred Olsens "Braemar". Local produce including bananas piled 2 metres high, melons galore, three metre local fish(No-one seemed to know what they were except local) and just loads of atmosphere. OK, plenty of flies, smells and blood but that was to be expected. There was absolutely no pressure from the stallholders who were happy to be photographed with their produce or take pictures of us.If you enjoy local markets this is not to be missed.

This market is cooler than the Mercado Adolfo Lisboa next door, because it is much more authentic. It is crowded and smells like blood, and has flies and tacky local music playing. Lots of the vendors are drinking beer while chopping up big pieces of meat or fish. I bought some farinha and an ice cold coconut, before heading out to the waterfront to be hassled by the sketchy sailor types that were...I guess just hanging around on the docks.
