We visited this area while touring Manaus. It's, by far, the nicest area we saw with new condos and a large hotel. The beach is man-made but looks nice. I'm not sure I'd go swimming but our guide said they have a net to keep the caiman out.

Ideal to pass the day. The river beach is nice, people pratice sports there. Most important, do not be affraid of the coca-cola colar of the Rio Negro water: is natural, comes from a "tea effect" from the tree leaves that drop into the water and create this color.

Ponta Negra is a popular ponit in Manaus: if you are staying for more than 1 day, you should certainly go there. Locals go for the beach; popular festivities usually take place there - there is traffic on weekend, so prefer going in the morning. Staff in the hotel advised me not to bath there because it is a little poluted. It seemed very poluted to me. They told me to, once there, get a boat and go to Praia da Lua (5 min; R$15) - that is clean and good for swimming. I didn´t go. Instead, I would ratter overnight at hotel Tropical Business (they don´t do day use) and spare a day on their marvelous swimming pool overlooking the beach. You can go to the beach for eating and drinking some caipirinha. Despite of the overal scene, the place we got ours seemed very clean (I asked to get into the kitchen so i could wash my hands).
We didn´t get sick in this trip :)

Nothing compares to the feeling of swimming in the Negro river. Take a boat at David's Marina and spend some time there. Single.

It's a bit far from the city center (I took a bus, it was an 1h trip, almost), but it's worth: you can see the sunset by the Negro river, with the sound of frogs and birds and the all the beautiful landscape that the river presents. It's also a park, in which you can find some small restaurants where you can have regional food or beer and French fries, or fried mandioca. Superb place!
Families also come over to take the children for a walk or ride their small bikes :)

I was born in Manaus but left at the age of 2. So my mother used to take me to Ponta Negra beach when we lived there, so I decided to go back after 50 years!

A beach, a walkway, 1 burger stand, 2 popcorn vendors, 1 ice cream booth and 1 Tacaca soup vendor. Half of the promenade is currently closed off it seems.
Anyway. Beach in the Amazonas? That's not what I came to see. Yet it was marketed by the tourist information as something spectacular. Maybe it is for them.
In my view, this is more interesting for local people who go jogging here or swimming. No cafes, bars, restaurants or anything we know from beach promenades in other places in the world.

Went to Ponta Negra Beach after a business dinner just for a look.
It was night time so could not see the river but the ambience seemed to be quite good. and the landscaping interesting even if slightly run down.
Not planning on a quick return....

Good place to cool off the city heat.
Well kept city beach, with nice views, clean sand and several kiosks to help you spent the day.

During the day, Ponte Negra beach is uncrowded and family-friendly. The water is warm and delightful. Chairs, a table, and a sun umbrella can be rented for a modest cost. Sodas and water--and perhaps more, we didn't ask--are available at nearby stands.
At night, the end of the beach nearest town is very crowded with teens and young couples; many more food and beverage stands are open than during the day. Nobody (well, almost nobody) speaks English. Great people-watching day or night.
