For a city this small there is a great variety of period western architecture spanning several generations. Sort of pre and post Victoria besides that of the Victorian time.

Across the street from the castle entrance and up a flight of steps is Otemon Square. Here you will find an excellent Sightseeing Info Center and some of the city’s Western style buildings from the Meiji period.
We walked from the info center and headed toward the Former Library not knowing exactly what to expect. In addition to several other Western/Japanese hybrid structures located around the square that have been lovingly and meticulously restored, there is an open grassy area with miniature replicas of 14 of the Western buildings all easily accessible in one spot.
It is almost as if a whole town of tiny buildings has been recreated here for you to wander amongst. The buildings are perfectly recreated and you can see them in miniature and then visit the buildings themselves.
If you take photos of just the small buildings they look very real and appear full size - if you include people in your photos, then the magic of the place is obvious. We were the only people strolling around when we were here so we had to use each other in our photos for scale.

Sitting on a courtyard close to the former city library are over a dozen of miniature replicas of the old western style buildings in Hirosaki. They were meticulously created, copying in detail the design and architecture of the originals. It is a good idea to come and study these miniatures, as it would be difficult to go round and see all the originals. They give you a measure of the extent of western influence in this city. It is a pity that some of them are showing age. Better maintenance is required.
