Choshoji is situated at the end of a street (actually 2) lined with temples. There's a dozen or so temples in one area. Most of these have little to offer, unless you really like temples, but Choshoji is different. It holds a number of tombs of the former lords of Hirosaki Castle. This is at the end of a road lined with temples that we found to be of little interest, especially on a searing hot day. The best was saved for last. Inside the main building are beautiful wood floors, while opposite is a small building house over 100 statues. At the back are the tombs of nobles.

This place has the tombs of five generations of lords and there are other artifacts inside one of the houses. I'm not sure it's actually a temple. There's a 300Y admission fee which I was unaware of, so someone may shoo you away but it's because you need a ticket. The main gate is under renovation so under wraps for... More

I took a tour of the temple from a cruise ship. You don't need much time to see everything. We had 30 minutes and that was more than enough. There is a fee of ¥300 to go inside one of the buildings. If you have never seen a Japanese temple and this is the closest one to you then go... More
