This station was opened about 120 years ago. It's famous for a European style station building. However it is under construction now due to renovation until 2018. I didn't see original design of the station. I've found some interesting things in the station. Old drinking water machine, nostalgic toilet and old signage of the station. I will come back after... They were renovating the station in December when I was there, but there is still a few things to see, and this is where you get off and on the train to Mojiko Retro

This used to be old retro memorial station building. Unfortunately, this is now under renovation construction. The main entrance area has a construction cover. They rent iPad for those who need renovation process guide. The renovation is scheduled to be completed by March, 2018.

We arrived in by train, only to find the station completely under renovation and the courtyard outside that usually has a fountain etc all shut off and closed. Definitely no photo opportunities. We then wandered down to the waterfront and I realize this is a little town but it definitely lacked a real 'wow' factors and things to do and... More

The reason for the poor review is that the station is being renovated so you cant see anything of the old world station building at the moment. So if you are keen to see this iconic building save your visit until after the renovations are complete

This is billed as a retro style area. You are greeted with old time music piped through the pa system. There are rickshaws to take you around for a cost. I didn't find the steam locomotive station, but went for a look at the port. It is more like a small sea villiage. The ferry leaves for here to go... More

It was the oldest JR station in Kyushu, and retained all the historical elements and structure of the 1900s, which made it an exciting attraction. Lunch at the Shabu-Shabu restaurant at the station was good.
