This building was built by Mitsui finance group, and it was used to use as a guest house for VIP of companies. Mr. and Mrs. Einstein stayed there when they traveled in Japan. Nowadays it is used as a restaurant and a event space. Visitors are able to visit and look at inside of the event hall.

A great deal is made of Einstein's visit to Japan (occurred just after he had been notified of winning the Nobel prize and receiving it).
An interesting house - but not much info in English. Enough to know where he sat, slept and ate.
Bemused by the Japanese gardening approach to training rose bushes - different to our more English style techniques.
If you are in the area and have time worth a look.

First of all, I do agree this is a lovely building with a delicate garden. However, there is not much to see for the tourists.

There is a restaurant serving the popular local dish, "roasted curry," here. Regretfully, they are off work during the New Year holidays.

We had dined in the building the evening before and decided to have a look around the following morning. This is the building where Einstein was said to have stayed during his visit. There is little explanation in English although it does give you a look at the architecture of the time in Japan when the town was a thriving port town. For Yen 100, worth a visit but unless you read Japanese or have someone to translate for you, don't expect too much.

In Mojiko Retro area, there are many western buildings in Meiji time. Old Mitsui Club, which stands just in front of JR Mojiko station, is one of them, and it is maybe the most remarkable one. Einstein stayed in this building, as he visited Mojiko.

A great looking building that now houses a restaurant. Does not look like a traditional Japanese building.

This is an ancient building, not huge but pretty, obviously European in style. It is said that Einstein once stayed here. The entire building, both outside and inside, has been well preserved and well maintained. The ground floor houses a restaurant (which was quite full for lunch on our day of visit) and the local tourist information centre. The exhibit rooms upstairs cost a small fee to enter but quite worthwhile. The displays contain nothing very special but the antique furniture, the way they are displayed, the decorations and the photos bring you back to a time long past. Quite a pleasant and interesting experience.

If you arrive in the old port town of Mojiko by train, make this your first stop after you exit the historic JR Mojiko Station. The Old Moji Mitsui Club, built in an unmistakable European half-timbered style is virtually opposite the Station and also houses the local Tourist Information Centre.
On the Ground Floor is a period restaurant and an event hall which housed an exhibition by various local craftsmen when I visited. Whilst entry to the Ground (1st) Floor is free, a small entry fee is charged to visit the Einstein memorial rooms on the upper (2nd) Floor.
Make sure you pick up the useful free Sightseeing Guide and Guide Map to the Retro Town of Mojiko from the Tourist Information Centre (available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean), which I used for navigating my way around the rest of the attractions in the Retro Town.

On my way back to Fukuoka from Beppu, I just dropped by this small town. So peaceful an calm... As a stranger felt like an English man in New York! Lovely and friendly locals, and a few tourists. I was stunned to know Einstein stayed in this city so first thing to pay a visit is this place. There is also another Japanese famous writer's exhibition but all is in Japanese. But still interesting to look around. First floor is also used as a tourists information center and restaurant. Feeling Einstein's existence was good idea!
