About
Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery… founded in 1967! The Schmiling brothers that grew up in von Stiehl Winery now own and operate it. The older brother, Aric, utilizes the most modern equipment known to winemaking as he artfully crafts fine wines. The younger brother, Brad, likes romance and history and manages the business. The Civil War-era building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a tasting room, a 10,000 square foot production facility, three Civil war era underground limestone tunnels and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views. Von Stiehl’s 30+ grape and fruit wine recipes use top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries), as well as West Coast-grown grapes.

Ok, you’re in Wisconsin. Not what I would call ‘wine country’. But, there are a few wineries in the area. So you think, gotta be cherry and orange wine, right? Ich.

As you pull up, the charming, old building gives you a sense that this place been here a while. As you walk through the door, you are greeted by a friendly face. In our case it was a wonderful woman named Valerie. She guides you through the history, the wine expertise, and the family atmosphere that surrounds this classic building and business. But, after you listen to the wonderful stories, the wine is there. Grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and more. A great choice of varietals and a few specialties that will intrigue you.

Then as you come to the end, you have some amazing ciders to try. Don’t stop, grab a class and wander upstairs to their lounge and relax, you’re in Door County. A nice little slice of wine country that you never expected.

Recommend the Malbec.

The Von Stiehl Winery in Algoma is a well run business by the Schmiling family, a local family that purchased the winery from Dr. Charles Stiehl years ago. First I will address their wine, both reds and whites are very good, and we have, over the past years purchased numerous cases of their wines.

A little something that people don't know about the history of the winery. First Dr. Stiehl started to try the wine production idea in his house on Fremont Street. That was about 1961 as I recall. I dated "Docs" daughter and often time assisted Doc when he was working on the wines in the basement. Being a Dr. of medicine, Doc worked with plaster casts a lot, and decided to try to incorporate that into his packaging / bottling operation. We would wrap the bottles with plaster of paris, then dip them into various stain batches to try to come up with an aged look for the bottles. We did accomplish that but ran into a problem that altered the packaging. That was, when people opened the bottles, they would get a little plaster into the wine. We then changed to putting a plastic shrink-wrap around the top of the bottle.

Now, the building on Navarino Street, is an old historical brewery building, that was modified. The wall in front of the building is made from brick that came from the old St. Mary's grade school. Our family had a farm on the north edge of town and we had torn down at old school and salvaged all that old brick. In as much as that old school was built very early in the Town, it matched the old brewery well. Dr. Stiehl purchased that brick from my father when he was remodeling the old brewery into the Winery! Now, there is a little more of the history!

We visited on 5/29/20. We stop here annually to enjoy a wine tasting and purchase wine. We were pleasantly surprised that they were able to provide a quality wine tasting experience while adhering to social distancing guidelines. The tasting was different than past tastings (due to COVID-19), but compared to other wineries we visited in Door County, their tasting felt most in keeping with the tastings we have experienced in the past. The tasting was indoors and the cost was $5. It contained 8 predetermined wines. They created a circuit that started at the back of the building and moved towards the front. They provided information about each wine and were available to answer questions. We felt they went above and beyond to create an environment that felt safe, but still provided a wonderful wine tasting experience. As usual, the staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. We will be back next year.

I called to make sure they were open, and got a recording saying that they're open for tastings 10-4. We drove over an hour to get there, only to find that we could not do a wine tasting, because apparently their definition of a wine tasting does not include actually being able to choose the wines you want to taste. The only thing they offer is a tasting where *they* choose the wines you taste. If you drink wine, then I'm sure you know that wine drinkers either drink sweet wine or dry wine; it's very rare for a person to drink both. But the wines they have on their tasting are a mixture of sweet and dry, meaning that you are essentially being asked to pay for wines that you won't drink. (Personally, I drink dry wines, and sweet wines taste awful to me, so something like cherry wine is not something that I would even try because I know that I won't like it. Just like a person who drinks sweet wines would not try a Sangiovese, and if they did, they wouldn't like it.) We asked if we could just buy a glass instead, and were told no. What about a bottle? No again. So we left. I have been a supporter of this company for many years, and have been going to their sister winery Captain's Walk literally since that day it opened, but this experience has completely put me off. I've visited hundreds of wineries and in all my years of doing so (including during Covid) have never encountered a wine tasting where you can't choose which wines you want to taste. It's extremely disappointing that they would run their business like this, and I for one will not be going back.

I provided an average rating for 2 reasons.
1) I've been to 100's of wineries at there was noting too unique about it. Kind of a boring tasting session with minimal info unless you ask a lot of questions. Social distancing was OK. A little congested at checkout. No rubber gloves or masks being worn by employees.
2) I would have purchased more wine, and their $50/bottle, but there was only a dollar amount discount, no percentage. Weird. Never been to a winery that didn't provide percent so it's equitable across all price ranges.

Staff was friendly.

I went to 6 wineries in Door County this week. This place was the most creative in trying to prevent anyone from getting sick. They took old windows and made a shield to pass the wine.
The building is quant, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the wine was flavorful.
I highly recommend stopping

Our server was so nice and helped us pick a bottle of wine just to our liking. We enjoyed a delicious bottle of Von Stiehl Old Vine Zinfandel at a table outside while listening to Michael Saint play some sweet tunes. The setting was perfect, right on the Ahnapee River, and the weather was awesome! So relaxing!!

We were there on a Friday, when the music goes from 2-5pm. We didn't get there until 4pm, and I was really wishing we'd gotten there earlier, so we could've had more time. They also have live music Saturdays, 12:30-4pm.

Von Stiehl Winery is an Algoma landmark well-worth visiting. Sample the wines which they produce on premises. In summer, they offer live music and refreshments. With Lake Michigan as a backdrop, you can’t go wrong!

We visited Von Stiehl and did one of the Tunnel tastings they were offering - it was one of the highlights of our trip to Door County! The tastings are held in a barrel aging room in the stone basement of the winery. Our tasting feature 5 red wines that were poured ahead of time into disposable glasses. Each place setting had a nice wine glass, so you could pour the sample into the glass for tasting. It came with snacks like toasted almonds, chocolate covered cherries and chocolate truffles, which were perfect with the wines. (I believe the wines offered vary week to week.) The experience was informal, with everyone in the group encouraged to ask questions about the winery and the tunnel space. I would allow a solid 45 minutes for the experience and any pictures you would like to take while there. One note: to get to the tasting, you will descend using the original stairs to the basement. If you have mobility issues, this could be a challenge. (It was not for anyone in our group.) We would definitely do this experience again!
