Even though the other small wooden buildings around this complex are a little run-down, the central one is beautifully crafted and maintained and definitely worth seeking out.

Little temple tucked away by the railway line

Kamakura is full of temples and despite having visited over a dozen times, I continue to discover new ones! On a recent visit to Hase, Kamakura, we went to this little temple which is a little tricky to find. To get there from Hase train station, you need to walk up the street that leads to Hasedera and the Big Buddha. However before you get to those sights, there is a small street on the left that you need to take that seems to lead just to a residential area. Follow that around and it veers left. You will soon see a black marble signpost with some carving in Japanese on the right hand side which I can only assume refers to the temple. Walk up the path and you will see a stone tori gate which is one of the 2 entrances to the temple. The other entrance also marked by a stone tori gate is right alongside the small Enoden railway line. The temple is very small- its main building is wooden with carvings with some small shrines in the grounds. The temple is not grand nor would I put it on your itinerary if you have limited time in Kamakura however if you are in the area and have time to explore the entire area and are visiitng Hasedera (MUST See!!) and the Big Buddha, then you may want to wander down to this tucked away tranquil little spot to experience a temple on a much smaller scale. We went there on the day of the Masked Parade festival which is a traditional festival involving the carrying of a mikoshi, children in traditional pulling a large gong, and about 10 men in costumes wearing unusual masks. The festival takes place on around 18 September and starts at the temple and then includes a parade across the railway track and around some of the narrow neighoring streets.

Small but Legit!

Only a small shrine, but the building itself is very old. Looked really cool, and easy to find. Not a lot to do in the area however, you specifically need to go to it with the intent of only looking at that.
