We travelled from Shinjuku station to Ofuna, the monorail was easy to find as well signposted.

The automatic gates made it easy to pay by Suica. The monorail was immaculate with friendly staff, and gave a birds eye view of the area.

This is a great way to get from Ofuna straight to Shonan-Enoshima station, then walk over the bridge onto Enoshima Island. A fantastic way to fly over the traffic and houses, and the experience is fantastic. A separate entrance from JR Ofuna, so you have to walk a couple of minutes to the North side of the station buildings, but signposted. Also, you can buy a 1 day pass for Y700 (Y350 Children), which covers all trains between Ofuna, Kamakura and Fujiwara, so that's the JR lines, Shonan Monorail and also the Enoden Electric Railway.

The Shonan Monorail runs from Ofuna Station to Enoshima. It is a 14 minute trip that takes you up and over a hill with a great view of Ofuna and the ocean side. It is a fun choice, especially if you have kids. It can feel like a roller coaster at times if you get a seat at the front or back.

Know before you go:

The entrance to the Shonan Monorail is on the other side of Lumine Department store. Exit from the South Gate of Ofuna JR station gate and cut through or go around Lumine Department store. It is one floor up from ground level.

It is a monorail and you get pretty high up at points,..if you are not good with heights- skip this ride.

One of my sons gets motion sickness easily. He gets sick right away if he is reading or playing with my phone.

The end station from Ofuna is Enoshima Station. It is NOT the same place as the Odakyu Enoshima Station (which is actually called Katase Enoshima). From the monorail station, you will need to take a 10 minute walk down a nice shopping street to get to the Aquarium or beach. There are plenty of small shops and restaurants along the way. When you come down stairs from the monorail station, look for the entrance to the shopping street and then follow it to the beachside. It will be across the main street.

If you are riding the monorail for fun and not heading to the beach, there is really not much to do at the stations along the way. Most of the shops and restaurants will be in Ofuna and Enoshima.

Used the route from Ofuna to Enoshima.
It is quite fun to ride, running between buildings and houses, see the town.

Finally from April 2018, Pasmo/Suica can be used for the monorail ride. more convenient.
(I used the rail quite a few times last year and the year before)

The Shonan Monorail conveniently connects Enoshima and Ofuna, it is unique in that it is a suspended monorail, and therefore the.view from the front-end is not blocked by the rail and other machinery.

We bought the Kamakura JR day pass (700 yen/adult) and it included the Shonan Monorail. We rode it going back at the end of the day from Enoshima train station up to Ofuna.

It is a fun ride. It basically is an up-side-down train hanging down and riding above the rooftops and street. Can see some interesting views such as houses and streets from above as well as scenery.

On the Narita Express, I had seen these strange-looking overhead tracks several times when passing through Chiba, so it was quite the revelation to see the same structures being used to support the monorail car I was riding in from Ofuna to Enoshima. Not exactly a smooth ride, like the monorail trains at the Tokyo Disney Resort, but it was rather cool taking a suspended monorail type for the first time, and having it actually dip, climb, and go through a couple tunnels made it a rather novel experience. It was a bit of a walk from the station at end to Enoshima Island itself, but the neighborhood you pass through is quite interesting as well (just keep an eye out for cars and bicycles in the narrow areas).

This is really good fun, as well as getting you from A to B. The views and the overall experience are worth going out of your way. I took this way back from Enoshima to Kamakura. Note you can't use your Suica pass, you have to buy a separate ticket, but it is good value.

Take the JR line to Ofuna and then join the Shonan Monorail to Enoshima area. It is very reasonable Yen 500 for two adults and a child and offers different views of the area. You can travel back to Kamakura after visiting the sea side. A good diversion.
