My husband and I went to visit Japan for the first time, and as part of our rather short trip - we decided also to go to Kamakura to see the "Great Buddha".
We were very delighted to find out, the possibility to be guided by some local students and booked it right away.
There was a very good mail correspondence ahead of our visit.
And right on time - Shunsuke and Souma welcomed us at the Kamakura Station. Two young men, curious on life; they had taken this opportunity /responsibility to meet and guide tourists coming to their country.
They took us right to the ticket office and bought tickets to the local bus, which we could use throughout the whole day. We went straight to se the "Great Buddha" and and from then on we just had the most wonderful day. They told us some of the history of the the temples we visited, and the customs before entering as well as customs and manners of Japanese culture.
We had lunch and and really good laughs. We had booked 6 hours, but before we knew the day was over. Shunsuke and Souma said it didn´t matter, but we felt very sorry to take more of their time, although it was fun it didn´t seem right. - and only our fault the schedule wasn´t kept.
To us, that too was a big lesson. When it comes to culture. Japanese people are so polite, they will always leave it up to you, where in Europe a guide would have said : "Now it´s time to move on, or else you wont see all we have planned for you".
Shunsuke and Souma, we can not thank you enough for giving us such wonderful time - and the souvenirs you gave us when seeing us off, we will treasure for the rest of our lives (!)
We really hope to be back some day - and it would be wonderful to see you again.
May the force be with you ! BIG SMILE
